It's because the chess worm in the upper right corner forbids it. The chess worm is the real king, and the king piece you think you have checked is merely an illusion it is projecting.

The King can just walk along further to left and up/down. I can't believe how often people forget that the board is just a 2d projection of a torus…

That's because White King invited Black King to a special party involving the Queen, a ménage à trois.

Lesser known chess move like en passant. When you get into the ménage à trois board state you're forced to immediately stop the game and eiffel tower with your opponent and any 3rd party. Whoever cums first loses.
