Discord has been a POS for years.
It's really funny watching them add paid features that older, established messengers have for free
Let's not forget an even bigger problem with Discord: It locks your communities, including contacts and years of content and discussions created by members, behind some corporation's
terms and conditionswhims. You (or your friends, or the "server" admin) can lose access to it all at any time, without warning. They can and have used this as leverage to extort personal info from people. A policy change, accident, or technical glitch can leave you out in the cold.This alone is reason enough to avoid it.
Computers and online tech has been popularized since the 90s, if they haven't figured out even an iota of computer skills since then, well that's on them

It sadly can't replace all the other things Discord does, but if all you want is low-latency VOIP with good sound quality - Mumble's your man.
Put up a wiki, it's all you really need for everything else
I think vent was the last of these I used before discord took off.

For some people TeamSpeak didn't go anywhere. I've been using TeamSpeak for the past 5 years as I started communicating with people who never gave it up.

I can't stand the fact that discord is used as a forum for many open source projects.
It's horrible, it weights a lot, it's not easily searchable and it's completely excluded from Google search results. Bring back forums!
leaving reddit was easy. i only had to move myself.
leaving discord will be almost impossible, as I'll have to move a dozen or so normies whom it took years getting them onto discord in the first place.

People need to go back to real forums.
Mumble for voice chat. (It already beats Discord in that department.) A server can be self-hosted, or rented for dirt cheap.
Matrix is getting better all the time, and although it won't replace all of Discord's features today, it is catching up. I already use it for text chat, and wouldn't be surprised if it could take over for video, screen share, etc. in the next year or so.
Tip for people wanting to try Matrix now: Consider disabling encryption on your Discord replacement rooms until Matrix 2.0 is fully released, to avoid occasional frustrating glitches. That won't be a loss coming from Discord, which doesn't have end-to-end encryption anyway.
Discords ui and feature popups are kinda annoying and all, people apparently do not appreciate what they give us for free.
Teamspeak had stagnated from being top dog for so long.
People are really going to miss the Discord of today when you start getting banner ads flashing at the bottom of the screen or limited server slots.
Got my fingers crossed the Discord IPO will be an absolute shitshow and no one is prepared to sink money into an already enshittified app.
