If there is a growing community that should be in this list, please comment it below.

If you think a category should / should not be in this list, let us know. There are so many amazing communities, but we also don't want this list to feel overwhelming.

Thanks! Added it to both

Love the banner and icon :)

There's a fairly inactive community for Saskatoon: ![email protected]

Hopefully putting it here gets it more visibility.

Edit: Since we don't really hate each other, even if we pretend to, I'll also point out Regina's community: ![email protected]

3

Thanks! Both have been added to the post & sidebar

/c/ThunderBay exists, but doesn't have much activity yet.

3
Lucireply
lemmy.ca

/c/Guelph exists. We try to keep it active. It's really just me and @[email protected] posting articles from local news....

2

Thank you! The community looks good :)

I've gone through and updated the post/sidebar + added the community

2

Thanks! I've added it to both lists under '💵 Finance, Shopping, Sales'

I tried to start a community called Assorted Crafts, but for some reason the url shows up with my user name instead of the community name.

https://lemmy.ca/c/Amuletta

How can I fix it? Do I need to blow it away and start again?

Ah, I can see how the 'name' field can be misinterpreted. That was supposed to be the short name of the community, and it will appear in the URL. Unfortunately, that field can't be changed after the community as been created. Even if we mess with the database on lemmy.ca, it might show up incorrectly elsewhere.

Since the community is just starting out, the easiest would be to make a new one with the name that you want.

There are also a few other communities that you might enjoy:

It's totally up to you if you want to post in those or if you want to build your own community. If you want to build your own, you can also cross post to / from these communities to help it grow.

[email protected] is actually the 2nd or 3rd oldest city-based community on lemmy.ca . It's not very active, but should definitely be added to this list.

Also, [email protected] would be a good community to add to the soccer category.

For team-specific Canadian-based soccer teams, there's [email protected] of the MLS (US-league with 3 Canadian-based teams). Other MLS sides include Vancouver Whitecaps and CF Montreal, which I don't think have a community created.

None of the 8 Canadian Premier League teams, nor any of the numerous League1 Canada sides have taken steps to establish their communities yet (as far as I know).

Thank you! Added all three to the post and the sidebar.

I'll also keep a look out for the other teams if they should pop up :)

At least in the browser, adding an exclamation mark redirects you to the community. Without the exclamation mark my phone thinks its an email address.

3

Yep, that's what happens in my web browser as well. I get a mailto: link when I click on that

3

Thanks! I added it under Toronto in the Cities / Local Communities section

3

Thanks! It has been added to both post and sidebar

2

No problem! The thread is still active, it just takes me a bit of time to update with new suggestions since I like to update it everywhere at once.

I've added curling to this post, the sidebar, and under the sports topic on Piefed.ca

Eventually once the Lemmy software implements compatible topic lists, I might retire this post so that the community can keep it all up to date :)

Oh there's also /c/QuebecLibre which is NOT about Québec separatism, but about free (as in LIBRE) open source software in Québec.

2
Otterreply
lemmy.ca

Added as well!

I added both to the 🍁 Social / Culture section, and I listed this one as Logiciels libres au Québec

2

Thanks! Added it to the social/culture section

I went ahead and made a Windsor community! Windsor is the city I was born in and I grew up in Essex County, so I felt a little left out not being on this list. While the community is named for Windsor, I figured it'd make sense to welcome content from all over Essex county instead of making community bloat for every town in the county.

/c/Windsor or ![email protected]

2

Thank you for making that, and sorry for the delay. It's been updated in the post and sidebar now!

We need some more activity there for sure. There are a lot of users here from Vancouver, we just don't seem to use the community much

1
Otterreply
lemmy.ca

Thanks, I've added them all

If you want an example of a call for mods, here's one I posted from a while back: https://lemmy.ca/post/31769390

I love the photos you chose for each community. Looking forward to seeing them grow!

Hey Otter, is the admin DM checked here? I sent a DM to there asking about taking over a specific community here that has an inactive mod and also inviting users from various Canadian Reddit subs to use this Lemmy, but it's been like 2 or so weeks and no reply. No rush, or being pushy for a yes or anything, just want to know if it's been received.

Hi Slyke,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you! The team has been extra busy these past few days. We did receive the message and we should have acknowledged it sooner.

Someone should hopefully review is soon and get back to you!

There are two communities I would really like to see some traffic driven to:

![email protected] - Celebrating Canadian music

![email protected] - Celebrating Canadian games, gamedevs and studios

I think these would be an easy add to the Canadian Social / Culture section.

2

The owner of those two communities deleted his account. They passed moderation of maplemusic to me and one other person, but givergaming got deleted with their account.

I've created ![email protected] to refill the void. Out of the two, a canadian gaming community was the one I was hoping to take off the most since I'm more of a gamer person than a music person. I've got some plans for fostering a community on there. I'll post about it in !communitypromo once I've got it set up a bit nicer, it is sorta barebones at the moment.

Strange how I didn't want to mod any communities on here but ended up moderating 3!

Thank you! I've renamed the last section and added the new communities there

I also made !inuit and !indigenous communities. Gotta cover everyone :)

Thanks! I've added this to the post, the community sidebar, and under the Ontario topic on Piefed.ca

I don’t think my (our) community should be put in this main list. But I’d like to mention it:

CanadaGrownBusiness

If you check it out, please read the sidebar to see if it’s right for you.

Thanks!

Thanks! I've added it in this post, the community sidebar, and under the Finance/Shopping topic on piefed.ca

Hello!

I have made the 2 political communities: Animal Protection Party of Canada and BC Greens for environmentalists and vegans to discuss important issues on the fediverse as I would like to encourage more growth on community owned social media ran by everyday canadians and to avoid the conflicts that may arise with corporate owned social media namely Facebook and Twitter interfering with campaigning that goes against their commercial interests.

May I request that !appc and !bcgreens be listed under !ndp under the politics section.

Please and Thank you <3

For sure! Sorry for the delay, I wanted to sit down at a computer to make the changes properly and check over all the links, and then kept procrastinating.

They should be updated now, thank you for making those!

2

Thank you Otter! A lot of things work nicely doing on the computer.

We got 13 political parties in BC and 18 In Canada. 15% and 16% are respectively covered on Lemmy.

So hopefully more join the list so that more people can receive their messaging on the Fediverse.
