The Cheapino gets quite some love recently :D Saw a couple posts in the last weeks, really cool! I too built a Cheapino for myself and a friend who wanted to try out these ominous "ergo mech keyboards" 😁

Yeah its a great keyboard at a great price point. none of the frills that are essentially pointless to me, but does what it does very well.

Is there a reason behind using an RJ45 instead of a 3 or 4 wire audio cable?

The 8 wires of the RJ45 cable are all used, allowing to have only one MCU. Also, RJ45 cables and connectors are cheap and common.

To manage all these keys with only 8 wires, a special "duplex matrix" is used.

and I guess you can unplug it without short cutting something like a TRRS does?

2

In theory yes. In practice, I never had problem hot plugging my trrs on my keyseebee board.

I ordered Piantor cause it seemed cheapest in my region (considering other sites have expensive shipping). Is there any site that provides this as a full diy set or did u order everything separately?

2

Yes, I ordered everything separately: I ordered the PCB from JLPCB and the other components from Aliexpress. I had switches and keycaps ordered previously from Aliexpress

You reached the end
