They slide in nice and smooth now. Wish I'd done it months ago, it was very easy.

easier to rub on there without dripping for wood slides - wax works as well. any type of lubricant that is appropriate for the slides will work, but wd40 is not a lubricant. if you want them to be smooth, get some superlube and your drawers will be flyin' <3
WD-40 is a rather poor lubricant. Maybe OP is also talking about wooden drawers or somewhere food is stored? In those cases I'd not use WD-40 either.
I'm a fan of using 3-in-1 oil for most things. Should be good for metal tracks.
Not food safe though. Not sure what to use on kitchen drawers.

Good point. But I don't know how it'd off-gas or if it'd leak onto stuff.
Yup, very old wooden drawers. They don't even have a runner, they're effectively just a wooden box sliding on a wooden shelf, so loads of friction. Part of why I'd delayed was because I wanted to sand them down and use some proper wax... but never seem to have the time. The soap took 2 minutes and made a huge difference.
Now that's a soap opera!
