Ted Cruz warns Trump tariffs could lead to a 'bloodbath' for Republicans in midterm elections

Summary

Ted Cruz warned that Trump’s tariffs could trigger a GOP "bloodbath" in the 2026 midterms, citing inflation and market fallout as major risks.

On his Verdict podcast, Cruz criticized tariffs as taxes on consumers and urged they be short-lived.

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 plunged nearly 10% over two days. Senator Rand Paul and others echoed concerns, with Paul warning tariffs could add $5,000–$15,000 to car prices.

Senator Chuck Grassley has introduced a bill requiring congressional approval of tariffs within 60 days or automatic expiration.

These republicans twice literally just had to say one word, "yes," when the impeachment votes happened in the Senate, and Trump would never have had power over them (and us) again, like magic.

58

Dems actually did introduce a bill to do essentially that in the Senate for tarrifs on Canada. It passed 51-48 with only 4 republicans breaking rank. Notably in this case, Ted Cruz voted against that bill

I should note it's unlikely Mike Johnson will ever put it up for a vote in the house. If he did and it passed, it will likely get vetoed. Without more republicans breaking rank it's not going to be able to get to the 2/3 of congress needed to veto override

Need to see more republicans with spines for this bill to get through

Republicans, and authoritarians more generally, value group solidarity more than anything else. They are in a very real and very important sense stupid, bad, people.

7

There's a bipartisan bill in the Senate right now to force the tariffs to expire after 60 days if not approved by Congress. So they're at least putting on a show of doing something. It mentioned it on the blurb up top

7

Reclaim the powers and nullify all tariffs that have been imposed by Trump since his inauguration.

Why stop with trump's tariffs?

4

If their masters tell them to vote against tariffs, they’ll do so. These politicians hold no actual power. They are the mouthpieces standing in front of the monsters who hold actual power. And they don’t give a shit about anyone or anything.

2

His real name is Rafael. He doesn't believe in preferred names.

Also, only a literal bloodbath of republicans will suffice.

His big worry is re-election, not the people this will hurt.

I'm glad to see that people here aren't reveling in looming economic disaster just because it might mean that their team gets to be in power.

43

In a properly designed and functioning system, reelection and caring about the people should go hand in hand. Stop caring, treat them like crap, someone gets to replace you.

We are not in a well designed, well functioning system.

8

And the people are still cheering him on, swinging their fat fists, because they don't want to lose to the blue team.

Of course Ted fucking Cruz is concerned with getting reelected, not, you know; the whole horrific collapse of the stock market, wiping out the 401ks and retirement savings of any of his constituents who even had them.

Or the financial harm that absolutely will translate into direct harm as people can’t afford to fucking eat.

No no. It’s that the party that caused this fucking disaster won’t stay in power. That’s the real reason they need to act.

and then the many trumpers that are dependant medicaid/care which Dr, snakesoilman will cutoff soon.

1

That’s definitely next. But the tariffs are absolutely going to fuck people over.

Then increased cost of food and other necessities is only the first part.

The next is companies finding ways to skimp where they can. I.e. payroll. They’re going to lean up and dump “extraneous” employees. Maybe reduce staffing below redundancy and fuck coverage. Maybe reneg on promised raises. And closing down unprofitable stuff. Maybe move to using AI for ever increasingly stupid applications.

The shockwave in the markets is only just beginning.

2

Again, Republicans are worried about their own jobs and power, not about any of the problems of the working American family, the average white fucking American family that voted for this btw.

Although you are correct, this is no different than most Democrats, as well. I mean the Dems spent $10 million paying influencers on TikTok to vote for them. https://www.youtube.com/embed/JytdxpsJdLQ

Also, to be fair, a large chunk of minorities, larger than last election's, also voted for Trump. So take it easy there on the race blaming, unless you want to blame minorities, as well.

Edit: Wow, lots of people in denial, I see.

Imagine being the poor asshole that has to listen to his podcast and then make a headline out of it

9

Midterms? Not at this rate. I'm sure some fabricated emergency will spring up delaying such democratic luxuries.

14

The people of Uvalde reelected the sheriff that let all those elementary students be murdered and tortured.

16

First. Fuck Ted Cruz. Second. It’s not just tariffs you fucking dumb cunt. It’s the whole toxic and traitorous Republican Party.

12

I'm imagining Trump's tariffs as them taking the lid off the ark of the covenant, let's hope it does to all the other Republican Nazis today what it did to the Nazis then.

3

It seems we are going back to 1933 again, now all that is missing is a president like FDR and having three or four terms.

If we give Cancun Ted the benefit of the doubt (something I am loathe to do for any MAGA Nazi), then perhaps he is truly warning HitlerPig of the electoral consequences of this economic folly.

In reality, I am 100% positive that HitlerPig will hear it as a call to suspend the mid-term elections.

8

Donvict Dementia is concerned with pleasing Daddy Vladdy and golfing. He cares not for Texas or Americans, Raphael.

I’m going to go devils advocate here… first Rand Paul, now Ted Cruz. When things break they’ll break quick, and as distasteful as both of these guys are, they’re not the dumb ones like Grassley, Bobert, or MTG. They smell something in the wind or they wouldn’t have the courage to speak out. Could we be witnessing the beginning of a schism?

8

Yup. I phoned my friend just to say I called it too

Musk spent 10s of millions on a state supreme Court election, like 10x the campaign spending of the other side, and lost

If musk and Trump can't influence elections, their threats of primarying anyone who steps out of line is empty. Their support won't save their seats either

People are so angry they can't even appear in public without being screamed at... And what happens the next day? Trump destroyed the global economy single handedly and went golfing

There's some true believers... But mostly, Republicans are going to do what keeps them in power. And the Trump-Elon power couple isn't it... Even the media has started to back away from propogandizing their actions

Even if you're right this movement is far from critical mass yet. I'm thinking at least one month will have to pass before there is enough pressure for Congress to even vote on taking back the tariff power .

3

they are vultures, they are hoping enough damage is done where they can sitll grift and then they will swoop in.

1

Like there will ever be another actual untampered with election.

8

They fucking better or we’re perma-fucked, not just fucked for the next decade like now.

Fuck.

7

It's more than likely true because this shit always blows up in their faces, but it won't matter if all we do is elect more milquetoast Zionist corporate Dems. If that happens, we will end up right back in this same spot in a few years.

7

doesnt matter if you're a reptilian that migrates to cancun to shed your skin.

7

I don't know why they are so worried, Trump has toppled all the heads of government agencies with loyalists. They will be well prepared to finish their transition towards authoritarianism in the midterms, although they will have a lot more to worry about before they even get there.

6

The feds have less control over blue state elections (although just ignoring the results is always an option), but red state governments will probably fall in line and throw out any results they don't like.

1
lemmy.world

Fled Cruz can go pound dirt with his hips. There will be a bloodbath on a few fronts.

5

he will probably emigrate to cancun before the bloodbath happens.

1
lemmy.world

Nuuu, you can't sabotage the midterms yet, Cruz isn't running for election again until 2030. It's the only way us Texas lefties are ever getting rid of him.

4

Do you really want to leave Republicans in charge of the legislature until Cruz is up for reelection?

1

All that is balanced around a certain amount of voter apathy. My district is one of the most unbalanced in a state that has had its district map declared unconstitutional multiple times. The last election had less than 25% of registered voters participate.

Those maps can backfire badly, but it will take a lot of motivation.

3

and florida!

yes, the two congressional races went republican, but the spread was narrowing. and not by a small margin.

4
lemm.ee

It's a Good Thing these Same Republicans DID and ARE DOING Literally NOTHING to Stop these Tariffs that they are Calling DISASTROUS! Oh Well! At least we can rely on Chuck Schumer's DEMOCRATS to. . .Also Do Nothing to Stop these DISASTROUS Tariffs!

3

they want someone else to do it, so they can claim credit for it, thier supporters are very simple minded people.

1

Can’t wait until the day he, Paxton, and Abbott are gone for good from Texas. We need more like Jasmine Crockett to fill the void once those fuckers are ate.

3

How?

Nobody on the left is really working to spread any messages. A few comments per person isn't doing shit. Seems like the most that can be mustered is a little property damage. Any voice that stands up to help spread ideology gets targeted by the right and knee capped. The mind blowing thing is the right actively hide online among the left convincing them to knee cap these people. I just saw a post a few weeks ago shitting on Jon Stewart here.

How exactly are they going to lose against a neutered and apathetic opposition
