I've been using Libre office exclusively for a few years and don't remember encountering strange unremovable characters.1

RRentlar replylemmy.caCheck to see if they might be Bookmarks, or some other content organizer: View -> Navigator (F5) Check each category for what it could be, if you find it, right click and delete it.1
