The guy I got them from said he'd pulled them up from an old church. Admittedly less dull, but the weeks I've spent working on these have been painful

Pretty sure these are floor boards for parquet style flooring. Very typicallyin older workshops

Yes, top advice. These are clear, but I still don't like to take chances with old things from unknown sources. Always rubber up!

Well, he's not going to eat it and he's not sanding the floor. Wouldn't any fibers be encased in the bitumen and impossible to inhale?

I'd say use a planer, but that would make a mess of the blades.

Yikes, you have more patience than I do.

There's solvents that will at least soften, if not remove bitumen, and WD-40 can be used in a pinch.

Maybe try some of that if you've not finished already?
