Usually distros will offer a single version on their repo, but Blender is best used with multiple (portable) versions. Of course if you're just starting out, simply pick the latest version (5.2).
I had to stay on 3.6LTS for two years for film production, in parallel I did use more recent versions for various side projects.
You can also have different user settings for each version so I really advise using the good ol tarball.

Mayo is a good STL / STEP viewer too, if you don't need to translate, but want to view, save off a few parts, measure, grab screen shots, etc

IMO, license and cloud bullshit is more trouble than just learning the quirks of FreeCAD.
Its sadly for work and we use it for CAM
