I always ask for the can (with a heartfelt please and thank you hand signal). I've never been told no. Tho most times the can is handed over already opened. Wouldn't suprise me if this was true tho but also wouldn't suprise me if that's just an excuse to save 20¢.
I forgot which airline it was (Emirates maybe?), but they gave us stickers that you can put by your headrest to indicate that you want to be woken up during meal or snack service. It was great because you don’t have to worry about missing the food.
