I’d rather have the unsolicited linux advice tbh

but anyways that’s not super relevant because there very much is still racism on lemmy…

Yeah but I see a racist comment like once a week. You don't have to spend long on Twitter to find that shit.

What am I going to do with all of these ACME guillotines I imported from France, then?

Well, bought and paid for, may as well use em! Just because the .ml and hexbear folk are near clownish in their frothing evangelism, doesn't mean they're wrong about everything....

I get what you are saying, but you should try Chimera Linux.

Are the rumours about Arch being too hard true? If someone's experienced with Debian and Fedora, will they find Arch too hard?

5

Plus now there's an installation script that is really good for basic installs. Takes about 10 minutes now.

4

I think vanilla Arch is daunting to get going because it drops you in with so little to start with. Once you're past that I think it's fine. Especially if you're already used to Debian and Fedora. Sure, you'll need to learn to use pacman (Arch's package manager) and it is a little confusing at times, but there's a ton of great advice for it online, including the Arch wiki.

I highly suggest EndeavourOS. It's basically Arch with a better install process. Once its done you'll have a desktop environment and browser. I'm using CachyOS which is similar but has a little but more stuff, but it's still Arch. Like you, I'm very confident with other Linux OSes but was wary of Arch. Turns out people have good solutions to get over that worst hurdle nowadays (the original install and getting a desktop environment).

Also, unlike other derivative distributions like Ubuntu to Debian and Manjaro to Arch, EndeavourOS really is just Arch. It's just a nicer install process.

3

It's not really difficult but as far as i remember, you have to configure everything yourself, which can be tiring. Depends on your mood though, if you're into configuring your own linux system, then i guess Arch is perfect for you.

We are racists when it comes to operating systems. No windows allowed at home.

Maybe we need a term for this. What do the gender focused Lemmy crowd think is a good term for not accepting windows.

Windophobic?

I love that over on Reddit most of the content is still coming from Xitter. The only change is that they aren't posting direct links crediting the person who made it.

What a half-ass way to boycott a site.

46
lemmy.world

Well, from what I've seen, they're really bad at boycotting things. They couldn't even handle "reddit blackout" in 2023 and most of redditors came back after a day.

19

Some of us are still here since they black out. I haven’t posted or commented on there since.

8

That's because it happens frequently, so people who are good at boycotting things leave gradually.

The only problem I have with x alternatives currently (both Bluesky and Mastodon) is that my favourite r34 artists havent really switched plattforms :(

35

You should check. I've been surprised by the amount of "suggested accounts" on bluesky that were people I lost track of when quitting twitter.

A few months ago there was a pretty big wave of creatives moving to Bkuesky. I think around October. There might be more than when you checked last.

I joined Bluesky in december. Many of my favourite artists even have accounts there. They just aren't that active. Same with Misskey.

kinda funny, early Redditors like me used to think 9gag was never good lol, kinda like ifunny, so this is kinda like that Legolas gimli meme where it's like "never thought I'd join a 9gagger to fight for fediverse/anti corporate media" ya know?

12

Well, this was back in the ragecomics era, when it was literally 9 memes per tab. When they switched to infinite scrolling was when i was like “hmm, what is this reddit thing i keep hearing about”

Zoomer content

They’re the people that follow internet celebrities and drama so that’s what the content is geared for

One was surprised I didn’t know random YouTuber just because they’ve been big “forever”

Up to this day, I've never watched a pewdiepie video. I have no idea what he does/did. Same goes for Mr beast. I mean, I've heard the names, but I'm not intrigued whatsoever.

I never understood people posting porn to microblogging sites. What's the point of this? There are literally millions of other places to get porn already, it's like what the Internet was invented for.

But how else will you hear about all the little details of their daily lives on a regular porn site? The parasocial connections to your favorite porn stars aren't gonna form all by themselves!

20

You joke but the sad thing is that this is how OF content creators drum up the most business. They prey on giving lonely/intimacy challenged people some sort of subconscious feeling of hope and connection to someone else inside a screen. Why else would you pay for prawn? It's literally free all over the internet.

7
lemmy.world

I've read that it used to be a great place for really niche stuff. BUT your point still stands because I'm really not sure why that would be. Maybe the interface or something lent itself to that well or maybe it just hit the right moment and took off.

5
midwest.social

I think it's because of the advertising system. Once you stumble onto one of them, you get the "content makers" retweeting eachother. It doesn't cost them a dime to retweet someone else's post, and if you retweet, you're gonna get retweeted.

I'm still convinced there are some women I know that have/had an only fans (because of sudden changes to living quality without job promotions or other new sources of income). But this system also benefits them, if it is niche stuff like feet for instance, you'll never find them, and you'll never know it if you did. If it's "normal stuff" (good luck getting me to define that, I have no fucking clue anymore) most "content makers" hide their identities pretty well, and I'd bet money that there are unspoken agreements between them to assist in keeping it that way.

5
lemmy.nz

Heh. You think feet are niche.

Drag is waiting for the day Lemmy users learn about dolls. It'll blow their minds.

There was a vibe to it before tumblr banned all the porn. Lots of actual real stuff that was made just because people wanted to without any intention to monetize. Just people having fun. But I’m not sure that exists anymore. I don’t think it was really efficient or anything but I guess if you’re just casually posting some anonymous nudes and share them with a bunch of people it would feel weird to upload that on pornhub.

4

It's like a little more curated. Plus it can be interactive. There are nsfw activities that you can't do on porn sites.

2
lemmy.ml

I keep it to quickly check service outages.

Xbox, crunchy, Netflix, etc down? Check Twitter. If a bunch of people are talking about it. It's down. If not then it's probably a local thing with my ISP.

4

And you have the added benefit of not having to go near twitter.

7
lemmy.ml

It may be. But twitter gives immediate no questions asked results.

-2
JackbyDevreply

Idk, sites where people can report their own issues are usually more reliable than trusting a company ti announce every issue over Twitter.

3

The company isn't involved. I'm looking for other users all complaining about X service being down.

4

Unfortunately true. Someone really should throw Elon a Mario party. With steel toes.

0

So true. Two years ago I still used twitter for nsfw content, but even that got weird (and really suspicious sometimes).

This is why we can't have nice things.
