It's not news to anyone paying attention, but that weird Tesla fanatic uncle is going to find it a bit harder to rationalise an actual unambiguous world-famous Nazi gesture. We've even got those worshippers over here, and anyone reasonable who was on the fence with their pro-Musk proselyting can't overlook something this clear.

We're already seeing their responses in the wild. They're just denying it was a Nazi salute. And playing the "woke cancel culture leftists are taking him out of context" card.

And playing the “woke cancel culture leftists are taking him out of context” card.

An Australian neo-Nazi speaker recently pulled this coward move too, laughably. (Context: in their jurisdiction, the salute is illegal*).

Nazi promotion event 1: After [...] performing the Nazi salute, Mr Richardson asked the crowd if he was “going be fined now”. [1]

Nazi promotion event 2: i-i was just waving at my friend Beryl in the back row and they screencapped it out of context, it wasn't a salute :( leftism gone mad

Don't worry, antifascists bashed their office door in on Christmas regardless.

Many will find a away to overlook it. Even some commenters in this post found a way.

5

You're right, and I think I forgot to mention this in my reply - will people looking at those fans overlook it? When Musk was seen by many as a brilliant humanitarian ethical billionaire championing green vehicles and space innovation, that could be persuasive to typical people. But it's harder for typical people to respect any praise them now they've clearly unmasked themselves on a stage as a nazi.

he did it twice, with the hand going from the chest out. No chance it was accidental

51

If you've seen any leaked footage from neo-Nazi orgs, they're surprisingly garbage at performing the salute. It's actually amazing.

there are 2 salutes in the USA, o7 and hand over heart. This was very explicitly what it "appears to" be, and there is no excuse.

29

I cannot understand the true believers. The people who are saying (1) its a Roman salute or (2) its a "My heart goes out to you" gesture.

They can twist themselves into knots with any other conspiracy theory, but cannot imagine the richest/smartest man to ever exist could figure out how to throw out a plausibly deniable Nazi salute.

This is Sideshow Bob explaining his DIE BART DIE tattoo.

We are being gaslit by half a country. That was a Nazi salute.

24

So at what point do you actually become a Nazi is it when start doing the seig heils or do you need to be like goose stepping down the street first?

15

Just in case you were unclear. Although some people will pretend to be confused and that this is ambiguous.

His arm goes out to the side, in a beckoning motion; the nazi salute goes forward.

While the final pose is practically identical to a Nazi solute, the motion is completely different. Hitler's lifts straight up, like a crane; Musk's sweeps out from the heart. That's why I was not sure.

"it's only a nazi salute if it is from the Nazideuxe region of France!"

22

So what? He's out of practice? He's not historically accurate? He definitely tried to throw out a Nazi salute.

6

It is a Nazi salute.

Musk is just shit at performing it. It's still a Nazi salute.

7

Consider for the moment that he's rolling his face off so he's just doing what comes natural and makes him feel warm inside.

I'm asking this genuinely, how did the salute Elon gave differ from what you think a nazi salute is?

Okay, I reviewed what the actual Nazi salute looks like. Having done this, I actually do think this strongly resembles a Nazi salute. I think p>80% this was intentional.

O shit someone changed their mind on the internet? Impossible, you must be a deep state agent

I still think it's possible this was unintentional, and even more likely that it was intended to toe the line of plausible deniability. When I show this to people in real life, they are unsure, so I don't think it's as clean-cut and undeniable as people on social media are saying it is.

2

Seriously? You approve of this dirtbag enough to use him as a reaction image?

Later, during the 1920s and 1930s, Italian fascists and Nazi Germans adopted a salute which was very similar, attributed to the Roman salute, a gesture that was popularly believed to have been used in ancient Rome. This resulted in controversy over the use of the Bellamy salute in the United States. It was officially replaced by the hand-over-heart salute when Congress amended the Flag Code on December 22, 1942.

But yes, an obscure salute that was only used for a couple of decades over 80 years ago is very American...

Unfortunately for you, context matters. No matter how American this used to be you can't plan to do a salute like this without planning for it to have clear connotations with the Nazi salute.

25

Unfortunately for you, you repeated a talking point that is common right now even among purported leftist with no indication that it's satire. It makes sense that the community reacted the same exact way they would to people they don't want in this community who post that stuff unironically.

1

Unlikely he would have known that one, being from South Africa, even at his age.
