Panama celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Panama Canal handover as Trump wants to take it back

Summary

Panama marked the 25th anniversary of the U.S. handover of the Panama Canal with celebrations honoring the late Jimmy Carter, who brokered the 1977 treaty transferring control.

Donald Trump has controversially called for the canal to be “returned” to the U.S., citing dissatisfaction with Panama’s increased usage fees.

Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino dismissed concerns about foreign influence, affirming Panamanian control.

Experts note the U.S. lacks legal grounds to reclaim the canal without military action. Meanwhile, rising shipping fees and climate challenges continue to impact the canal’s operations.

The 1977 treaty relinquished control to Panama on Dec 31, 1999. Title was a little weird.

You'll find that messing with peoples fresh water supply radicalises them pretty quickly.

I read that it’s cheaper to ship an east-west/west-east US domestic cargo via the Panama Canal than to build an east-west/west-east railroad within the US.

Well one thing involves building an insane amount of public infrastructure, and the other involves shipping things on boats... So yeah, I imagine it costs a whole lot more.

Well, I think it's possible, to do it. How much the interstate highways project costed?
But today, it will be super expensive and we have low tax rates (for corpos, unusually wealthy people).
