The family get together could get even more interesting than usual with that many weapons added to the mix.

The only way this post could be more Lemmy is if it mentioned Linux.

You dare correct me? Time to take you back to school.

"Shilling" as used in my sentence is in the gerund form. A gerund is the '-ing' form of a verb that functions as a noun such as in the sentence "I like reading".

In my sentence, "shilling" acts as a noun, referring to the act advocating for privacy.

Please refrain from correcting me in the future

Ahh i see. This is another good learning moment for you. Have you heard of the term colloquialism before? Essentially, a colloquialism is used in or characteristic of familiar and informal conversation.

People typically use the term "shill" non-literally or sarcastically in casual conversation to criticize someone who passionately supports a cause, even if there’s no secret agenda. A good example is the way people use the word "literally" today. The word "literally" means 'word for word' or 'not figuratively'. However, most people use it today to intensify or dramatize their statements e.g I was so hungry, I literally had to eat the whole fridge. You can see that "literally" is used figuratively here

So that was my intention when using the word "shill". Call it hyperbolic or rhetorical if you will.

Maybe a bit of an unpopular opinion here, but how about you just let other people have their fun with a holiday however they want? With everything being a constant firehouse of shit coming at us lately, just let us be happy for a day and indulge in this nonsense.

For me the theme-ing of Christmas and the feeling of benevolence are things I can enjoy.

What annoys [tires] me and likely the intent of the post is sorta like an engagement ring, where it's commonly portrayed in media that the more money you spend, the more you 'love' the person.

20

Exactly. I believe Halloween decor spending has been catching up to Christmas decor spending, but some people get particularly touchy about Christmas. People just want some joy. No, it shouldn't have to be associated with purchasing, but many people have more money than time to invest in creating the ambience they want. There are so many more important things to get worked up about than people spending money on things that make them happy.

I'm sorry but tge fact that we can't even say "Fuck Christmas" is part of the problem. toxic positivity is baked into the holiday. it adds pressure to an already dark time

historically the holiday was about banding together through the darkest part of winter, so you are definitely speaking from a place of tradition, but...

we're allowed to feel differently from the culturally accepted way of thinking about this holiday, even if we all enjoy it. fuck christmas.

THIS

You don't have to enjoy Christmas, but maybe STFU OP. I am a manic depressive with anxiety and this is one of the few days a year I can really be happy.

Oh I'm all sorts of mentally ill and this whole holiday is draining on my soul and bank account. I guess different people have different experiences of life huh

Well, if so, I hope it makes you feel marginally better to shit on other people's experiences. Cheers.

I don't think I did any shitting on anyone here, I tend to do that in the toilet

Not the most horrific thing, wanting to give people gifts. You don't even have to buy them, could make something yourself and whatnot

29

Your username being Finnish I assume it's more Yule and less CHRISTmas for you as well?

Our ancestors celebrated winter solstice long before Christianity was even a thing, and everyone knows the best gifts are handmade, not storebought. Emotions over stuff.

At ours this year, the kids got toys, but the adults got framed family photos and such.

The thing I think that a lot of people forget is that you don't have to wait until Christmas/Yule to do it. Imagine if everyone treated each other like it was Christmas every day of the year. Just, you know, without all the depressing nostalgia music and needing to spend money willy-nilly. What an idea!

7

For the schismatics in the room Christmas is in January 😔

I'll be damned before bending the knee to the king of Rome!

6

... in this case, it's sparkling (for 5 minutes) consumerism enforced by capitalism 90+% of the time.

Idk, but I can't believe plastic reindeer & plastic cocacolaman (Santa) everywhere really bring any joy to most people.

5

Lemmy is the equivalent of your annoying cousin going through a Che Guevara phase: they're going to spend the most of the holiday mumbling into their chin about "commercialization" and "exploitation", but you're nonetheless happy they're here.

4

Everyone is free to enjoy the holidays, working retail kind of sucked the life out of it for me personally.

3

Naah, it's Pagan. Christians just hijacked it to make it socially acceptable in old Rome.

6

well this year is a leap year so that would make it 366 days. so it could be 365 days except for the 25th of December

You reached the end
