Man Penn State loses and gets the easiest path to CFP semis while Ducks will have to go through Ohio State or Vols. Two tough teams.

Florida State left out again. Lose 0 games not in; lose 10 games, still not in.

Watching ESPN, they're all railing against the auto-bids being 1-4.

I personally love that there's so much emphasis on conference champions. It removes a lot of subjectivity. Plus, those left out of the byes have the easiest first round + home game, something Notre Dame signed off on when they created the playoffs.

What do y'all think?

4

I like this take.

My argument is this: all four "power" conferences had newcomers in the championship games, two of which won and the other two came down to the wire and lost by 3 points. Those four conferences really aren't that different from each other at the top. Boise State is interesting, but isn't this one of the best "G5" teams there's been? It's like Cincinnati making the 4-team playoff a few years ago (and UCF, Houston, etc before). So they deserve to be rewarded, IMO.

The ESPN commentators were railing against the auto-bids during the games yesterday, too (especially Joe Tessitore). Made them really annoying to watch.

5

I agree with the auto bids as well, even though they remove a Neyland playoff game this year. I also must say that I was wrong about the playoff devaluing the regular season, and I think its at least partly due to the auto bids shaking things up in the bubble conversation.

The fact that there was even a debate between whether a team with two losses to 6-6 teams or a team that was 0-1 against ranked opponents should have a title shot is proof that the playoff is just too damn big.

Should have never gone past 6 teams, 8 at the very most.

2

This is what I've been saying, the parity of cfb is just nowhere near pro sports or cbb. I Personally want to do away with the playoffs entirely.

3

I view it the other way. Whatever else, we are certain that the teams that truly "deserve" a shot will get one. The bubble conversation now is just fungible resumes whining amongst themselves. If one of them pulls it off and wins the whole thing? Fine and exciting, but it just underlines the randomness that was always inherent in CFB.

3

The fact that scar at least got into the cheeze it bowl makes me happy. Thats a team that's vibe meshes so well with the cheezit and the mayo bowl.
