Are you a cat person or a dog person?
Cats or dogs? Katzen oder Hunde? Gatos o perros? Or something else entirely? Are you sure you're even a person?

Cats 😾 although I feel it is unethical to own pets, personally
I'd say it's unethical to breed them, but not to adopt them if that's in their best interest.
Yeah, breading is really messed up. If the cats have access to outside, i'd say it's ethical to adopt.
I think this is more of a problem with capitalism, than a problem with breeding being fundamentally wrong, we're incentivized to breed as poorly as possible, it's a race to the bottom.
That being said, I think some animals are bred pretty carefully, definitely not dogs and cats, but certain insect breeding operations are pretty ethical just because being ethical with them is insanely easy.
All pets?
I think owning a tarantula, for example, is perfectly ethical, because of the way tarantus live.
They should all be free to roam. BTW I'm not saying to make it illegal, just how I live.
Certain animals don't really roam as part of their lifestyle, most tarantulas are ambush predators, if you put a tarantula into a hole and regularly give it food, it doesn't dream of the outside world where it can roam freely, roaming freely is its worst nightmare because that's how it gets exposed to predators... tarantulas find a hole where they constantly get food and you can presume based on how they live in the wild that they've found the best hole ever.
They also show clear signs of stress when they are stressed, and they show less of those in captivity than in the wild.
That's my argument for tarantulas anyway.
If that is the case, than maybe it is OK.
Yeah, I think it's really case by case in the animal kingdom, we have to avoid anthropomorphizing everything.
It can be case by case for animals of the same type even. One of my cats is legit scared of outside and has no interest in leaving the house for any reason. The other cat is hesitantly curious so sometimes we bring him out on a lead. He never wants to wander further than a few feet though even if we prompt him to explore. They live good lives and feel safe neither really feels the need to roam far as I can tell.
We need to respect all living things, at least attempt too
I agree, I just think it's very unintuitive, we live with aliens.
Dog person. I've met a few cats I liked, but in general if I wanted to live with a creature that consumed resources and ignored me I'd still be married. :-P
Definitely cats! Especially the naked ones!
yoo like that sphynx thing? they look super weird id def consider having one if i were to get a cat xD
Yeah! I have one! He's super chill and cozy. They're pretty expensive tho.
:o... cool.
📸🤨
Here he is!
Doesn't look that naked to me...
Actually quite well dressed if I must say so myself
He gets cold, so he gets to wear nice clothes!
I thought we were all lizard people here
sssshhhh.....
don't let them know....
Neither, really. I can see the appeal of both, but would not have one of either myself. I married a lady that came with a cat, though, so technically more of a cat person.
Dogs. 100% dogs.
I’ve grown up with both and have both now.
Dogs are easier to take care of. They are way more affectionate. They love car adventures, hiking and swimming. They are part of the pact.
The whole “cats are self sufficient” thing is 🙄. The cat box is gross, I rather use a little bag and pick up dog poop.
I personally love dogs, but I've never had a cat, and they seem pretty cool.
I can't take care of myself, how would I care of an animal?
But I have babysit... Sitted? Babysat? Babyshat? A kitten, and dang he grew on me. So I kinda want one, but... It's just not for me.
As for dogs, family had two dogs and while Iiked them, neither liked me back as much as everyone says dogs do. I've been lied to. And I'm not one for walking. So if anything, more of a cat person then.
I feel this. I've gone through so many plants and I treat myself terribly. I know having a pet would probably help me mentally but I just don't have the confidence to take care of another living thing.
See my other comment, I highly recommend hognoses!
I recommend trying a snake out, specifically a hognose, they're extremely cute, and EXTREMELY easy to care for

I... You know what, I'm bookmarking this for future reference
dogs>cats>none. somehow found out foxes are the cutest thing ever tho and i like them more than both
Porqué no los dos? I like them both, especially when they get along in the same household!
I've always been a cat lover. Whether or not I'm a person is still up for debate.
Why not both? ;)
Definitely a cat person
I've had numerous tabbies throughout my life and I took care of a Husky, Blue Staffy, and Cockerpoodle in the past (not at the same time), I loved them all, but ultimately cats are just more self sufficient than dogs, and significantly quieter than the small dogs I've had to take care of
I wish I had the same quiet experience. My cat is louder than any dog I’ve ever seen. He just walks around screaming. He has since he was a kitten. 16 years later and it’s just as loud just but a bit deeper lol.
My username says it all
I like both. But if I had to pick, it’d be cats.
The reason is that many people around here don’t handle their dogs well. That results in noise (hysterical barks in some cases) and poo landmines you have to watch out for.
Well-trained dogs? Appreciate them. Dogs I personally know? Good boys! Random dogs from the neighborhood? No thanks.
Having owned both, cats and dogs are quite different, and great in their own right. Dogs as a trusty companion, cats as a peculiar room mate.
Cats are the mascot of the Internet. I love dogs too, but they require a lot of maintenance and attention compared to cats. Cats are the most arrogant creatures on Earth, and maybe the only ones that 'truly' live out their philosophy of life; of, "I'm better than you, and I know it."
Yes. And also horses.
Cats if I have to choose. Both can be great but I don't really want to keep animals as pets.
I feel the same on not wanting to keep pets, it feel unethical.
I think the ethics really depends on the specific animal, most reptiles and tarantulas are fine in my book.
I agree the specific animals and context is important, as well as comparing potential wellbeing in the wild vs as a pet. I have two axolotls let me tell you I've never seen anything with less going on in their heads than those things. My Venus fly trap is smarter than the both of them put together. Plus they're about to go extinct in the wild. Keeping them as a hobby is important for their survival and I can't imagine they'd in any way feel better or even notice being in the wild compared to a tank.
I also think that the hobby allows them to be ambassadors for their kind, people often assume tarantulas and snakes are monsters that are out to get you, one question i've heard people ask someone holding a snake is "Why isn't it attacking you"
People have these insanely perverse ideas about these animals that go away when they discover they're actually quite delightful.
I see.
Snakes! Also dogs
Both of them are great! ¡Ambos es lindos!
I am on team Total Animal Liberation (but also have a dog)
Me too, although I think adoption can be okay
Yep, gotta clean up the mess we left as humanity. We can not abandon them while they need us. Yet breeders should be absolutely illegal.
I agree. Even individual pet owners (or guardians) breeding with their pet is problematic imo. Certainly when they choose the breeding partners.
But even if the dogs are free to choose themselves you could argue that you shouldn't let them breed because it would be better to adopt animals in need rather than create new animals.
⬆⬆⬆⬆⬆ 100% ⬆⬆⬆⬆⬆⬆
The other day I had a conversation with someone who also rejects breeding but said that (female) dogs should give birth at least once in their life (because they read, it would lower uterus cancer risk). Almost as if people (even after a pandemic) still did not understand exponential growth.
Depends on where I live. Suburbs? Cat. House near the woods? Dog. Mansion or castle? Cat. Town or village? Dog. City centre? Something exotic, like a snake or a lizard. Mountains? Bird of prey.
Both. I have both
I love both, even though I have cats.
Kitties <3
I think I'm more of a cat person
Dog. Lifts up my day after I get home.
I love both. I had a Queensland Heeler when I was a kid but we have always took in stray cats from the neighborhood.
I like both, but I wouldn't own a dog. It's just way to high maintenance and complicates going on vacation too much. Our cat has a feeder in the shed, and he can stay at home alone while we're on vacation with no problem.
Cats are brilliant. But I like dogs.
I've had both my entire life, but my heart is in cats. They all are just so different personality wise. My current cat, Holiday, is hood af. She'll bat you away if you try to give her scritches unless she asked for them specifically, and she just let me scratch her belly despite being rescued by me when she was about 2 weeks old, and being nurses back to health from the brink of death. I love that smarmy shithead and her cute beans.
Dogs. Most love people, which is quite the opposite of cats.
Cat.
Why not both? I grew up in a household with a Great Dane and a Devon Rex. It was a amusing couple.
We have birds. Owning a parrot is like owning a blender without a lid.
I'm an argentine tegu person.
I can't wait to get my black and white!
I think all animals and many fungi are cute little fuckers that I'd protect if I can.
Cat 😾
Es heißt 'Katzen oder Hunde', ohne N.
And I like dogs more, because domesticated house cats are notorious bird killers, even for fun and not for food.
Ah dammit, typo. Still at the "wie geht's?" level of Duolingo :P
Never had any pets growing up because of my family but considered myself a dog person for some reason.
Then hubby's family got a small dog AND a cat. I kinda liked both for some time but then I found out that I'm allergic to pets. There was a very bad case of bronchitis when I would sometimes be unable to breathe at all. Started to keep my distance from both, especially the cat, because I had less of a reaction this way.
Then I had to take care of both because of family problems (some people dying, some living away for a long time). During this time the cat started to socialize with me more, demanding pets 50 times a day and I just couldn't say no :3 I started to really love this little girl and I even have less allergy now.
Today I visited my best friend in her new place for the first time. She has a GIANT FREAKING DOG. He's a good boi but not very polite, and as he put his paws on my shoulders and pushed me with all his 20+ kilos of weight and put his toothy face into mine the first thing that crossed my mind was "well, I didn't have to lie to myself that I'm not scared of big dogs, because I am :("
So, I guess I'm more of a cat person (easier to maintain, to get some personal space, blah blah blah) but I love our doggy anyway :D
