I was doing a bit of a bit anyway. Kind of a long standing, very niche, very low level background rivalry between desktop and mobile users. In the same vein as iOS vs android but even more irrelevant and pointless. My favorite type of bit.

In my own life I basically took to smartphone app usage over desktop browsers (or laptops) nearly immediately when I got my first in my early 20s. I’ve now come to the point where I find browsing written forums on non-mobile almost painful and only do it for troubleshooting type purposes. Same for consuming media like news or YouTube videos and such. Some things just seem to take to using as background, distracting scrolling and now that I know that I can’t go back. Although one desktop I had years back for about two years was boring as fuck and the IT somehow didn’t block reddit so I used that on desktop just so my bosses thought I was doing stuff and not on my phone (bad service there anyway and IT never seemed to care unless it was incredibly over the line nsfw stuff)
I’d like to block entire servers myself. But I can’t find a way to block the whole nsfw one. Individual communities yes, but I’d like to not see the whole server.
It would be nice if there was a directory that made it clear what server has defederated what.
Fragmentation and the lack of continuity and good navigation is seriously going to be what kills any chance a federated Reddit alternative has at becoming even 25% as large as Reddit was.
You can see what an instance has defederated by adding /instances to the URL of the instance. There's no way to see it for more than one instance (at a time) as far as I know, so yeah, have to agree with you.
Yeah, the only way defederation is a feature is if there's a way (even if it's standardized at the client-side) to merge that defederation for those who want a cohesive experience.
It'd almost be better if every user could pick their own "federations" instead of it being at the server level. Obviously the servers need to have that control and my hypothetical might not be in throwing range of what lemmy can/should do.
Your suggestion is entirely missing the point. In this context, "blocking" means stopping anything from that instance from showing up in the feed when you view "All" from your home instance, not stopping yourself from navigating your web browser to that other instance.

Communists believe in abolition of capitalism through communist revolution and eventually want to reach a Communist society. Given that such vision has not actually happened yet, Communists often support Actually Existing Socialism (AES).
Socialism is some varying degree in between that and capitalism. On the one hand, there are democratic socialists like Bernie. On the other, there’s also AES countries (e.g. USSR, China).

While democratic socialism is a variety of socialism, Bernie isn't really a democratic socialist, but a social democrat. Social democracy is the left of capitalism, which is right of socialism in any form.

In general, I find the term "democratic socialism" to be pretty cringe. It's like saying right up front "I'm not like those OTHER socialists!" Socialism is a liberatory project. Socialism is the auto-emancipation of the working class. THAT is what democracy looks like. Rule of the people.

Socialism will certainly NOT be very democratic for the people who own vast amounts of real estate, productive machinery, and propaganda media empires. Those people will certainly need to end up on the wrong side of a gun for the project to succeed. The wise ones among them won't force us to pull the trigger.

Most Americans definitely do not want socialism. People simply want things to be affordable, and be able to live with the social services we need readily available, and to have the freedom to do what they want. That's not socialism, that's a well functioning democracy with a strong economy.
A lot of Americans "definitely do not want" Obamacare either, but they sure don't want to give up the improvements that came with the Affordable Care Act.

I would recommend David Graeber or however it's spelled writing. Any time you read anyone's opinion take it with a grain of salt but Debt and Bullshit Jobs address many things, some of which can be taken as criticism of capitalism.
James C Scott is another anthropolgist and his most accessible book is probably seeing like a state. It's relatively even handed in it's critques of capitalism as it focuses on states including the USSR. It highlights quite well how markets and states can crush humanity because they have wildly different goals to people.
You probably don't want to jump right into hardcore theory so this might be a gentler intro into asking why society is the way it is and how it might be different without expressly pushing a particular political theory.

I'm on lemmy.world and there's been virtually no NSFW content I'm seeing on this account. I had to create an account on lemmynsfw.com to be able to start seeing it. Hell, I have an Instagram account specifically to see NSFW stuff and I still find my feed filled with completely SFW funny animal videos, baking creations, and woodworking. The internet does not want me to give in to my vulgar proclivities.

It's actually been super refreshing to, generally, be able to say I am a Marxist-Leninist and not immediately get downvoted into oblivion. There are still some of the kneejerk reactions to the CPC, but even then people seem more willing to engage on good-faith even with disagreements.

If you decide to switch instances you can check before you make a new account. If you scroll down to the bottom of that instances homepage you'll see some options for modlog, instances, etc. Opening the instances one shows you all the instances they are federated with and then the ones they have blocked.
You could always use Lemmy.world, or you can make an account directly on Lemmy.nsfw. The Memmy app lets you switch between accounts like you could on Apollo
There doesn't appear to be much on lemmy.ml or lemmy.world (or at least it isn't popular enough to show up in the Active, Hot, or Top feed), but if you select "All" instead of "Subscribed" or "Local," stuff from instances like lemmynsfw.com etc. will start showing up.
Yeah, I tended to stay away on Reddit, too. I find myself selecting it often here, though, because there isn't enough content yet for Local and Subscribed to show new posts often enough.
I usually hover between c/news and c/politics which has a lot of content. Once football season gets going I'll be on c/nfl and c/cfb a lot too. The pet themed communities are also thriving so that is there too. What communities are lacking quality content? My RSS engine pulls in a few thousand items an hour, I might be able to contribute.
I'm subscribed to 50+ communities, so I won't list them all here. A lot of my interests are relatively niche (stuff like Linux/FOSS, DIY, bicycling/urbanism, etc.) so it isn't that surprising that some of the related communities seem to be averaging between a post a week and a post a day so far, since Lemmy as a whole isn't all that big yet. (It could also be that I haven't found the most popular community for a given topic yet, especially if it's on a different Lemmy instance.)
My subscribed feed being overly dominated by c/politics, c/world and c/technology (the communities I'm subscribed to that do have lots of content) might be part of the problem too.

If you browse the all feed you can see nsfw posts as long as your instance is federated with the nsfw ones. That's if you have nsfw enabled on your account though, which you can turn off.

One can hide NSFW content using Connect for Lemmy. Also using Connect, one can filter particular words in posts. I know the apps for Lemmy are young, but if we Redditors will have a teeny look around, we can find a couple of tools to help us. It may not be perfect yet, but give it some time.
Porn? What porn? If I intend to.... do research, I return to reddit (since old reddit does not stop me from going to... research subs) and in all my time on lemmy.world, I have yet to see a single titty being shoved onto my front page.
Wound up creating a Lemmy account as well as this one. Still getting accustomed to it but it appears that, instead of relying solely on the mods to manage content, more control is given to the end user. As long as I can easily block trolls and other content I don't care for, I'm good.

Communism is no different from full-blown capitalism. I don't get why people choose I have to be a either capitalist or socialist. There are certain things that some elements of socialism can be good for, like having free healthcare. However, when it comes to the market, you want as fewer restrictions as possible without hurting the customers or companies growth, as that can be bad for the economy.
Pure communism starves human nature, pure capitalism stokes and gluts the absolute darkest traits of human nature exclusively: unquenchable greed, sociopathy, competition, schadenfreude, apathy, jealousy, etc.
It's funny to me how we look at human nature as selfish, competitive and even cruel, when every scientific experiment shows that unless there's a strong push for those traits, humans are decent blokes who like to take care of each other.
As you said, capitalism pushes us to our worst. If we get rid of it, people will naturally build a better world.
Greed, in my opinion is a "modern" notion designed to propagandize and misdirect away from the true culprit of our time, and that is motive. Specifically, profit motive. Greed, much like laziness, is a made up notion by the capitalist class. It implies that you can be altruistic and "fair" with your capitalistic desires, and anyone who isn't doing as such is simply morally bankrupt.
It allows people to ascribe a personal moral failing to the capitalist, instead of analyzing the underlying motivations and structures that govern their behavior. It means people can, as temporarily embarrassed millionaires, imagine that they would never make that kind of moral failing given the opportunity.
Except, they would make that same "mistake" if they were ever given the opportunity, because capitalism demands it.
The one hard and enforced rule that would need to be in place would have to be to put a hard criminal legal cap on unchecked, society warping greed. By this I mean there are always some humans who always seek ridiculously disproportionate wealth and power to everyone else, allowing them to do so allows them to warp the culture and normalize that mindset, even making it aspirational to people that otherwise wouldn't.
Setting a maximum annual income with a 100% tax beyond a certain level, probably a couple million, would also be necessary for things to improve. Cue the millions of class traitor capitalism apologists who would cry tears of blood despite not having a small fraction of that in their bank accounts. "It would stifle investment!" oh so you'd have to include a lot more people in any large scale venture? The horror, amirite! “People wouldn't want to work hard!" because in a world where very few make that kind of income, not being able to hypothetically make 3 million a year would make everyone lazy amirite!
There are solutions, but too many peasants on the ass end of the problem are too busy defending the problem and the people that cause it, in pathetic hopes they will one day be invited to the little club of exploiters living like modern Pharoahs on the backs of most of society.

I was doing a bit of a bit anyway. Kind of a long standing, very niche, very low level background rivalry between desktop and mobile users. In the same vein as iOS vs android but even more irrelevant and pointless. My favorite type of bit.
I almost never use mobile devices. I have almost exclusively used social media via desktop or laptop my whole life.
Is there a reason why? I was doing a joke or bit originally, but I do wonder these random things.
In my own life I basically took to smartphone app usage over desktop browsers (or laptops) nearly immediately when I got my first in my early 20s. I’ve now come to the point where I find browsing written forums on non-mobile almost painful and only do it for troubleshooting type purposes. Same for consuming media like news or YouTube videos and such. Some things just seem to take to using as background, distracting scrolling and now that I know that I can’t go back. Although one desktop I had years back for about two years was boring as fuck and the IT somehow didn’t block reddit so I used that on desktop just so my bosses thought I was doing stuff and not on my phone (bad service there anyway and IT never seemed to care unless it was incredibly over the line nsfw stuff)

Fragmentation and the lack of continuity and good navigation is seriously going to be what kills any chance a federated Reddit alternative has at becoming even 25% as large as Reddit was.
You can see what an instance has defederated by adding /instances to the URL of the instance. There's no way to see it for more than one instance (at a time) as far as I know, so yeah, have to agree with you.
Yeah, the only way defederation is a feature is if there's a way (even if it's standardized at the client-side) to merge that defederation for those who want a cohesive experience.
It'd almost be better if every user could pick their own "federations" instead of it being at the server level. Obviously the servers need to have that control and my hypothetical might not be in throwing range of what lemmy can/should do.
I read earlier today that at least one instance is defederated from lemmynsfw so you can try making an account on that/one of those..

Find the hosts file on your machine. Add a line for the domain you want to block, like so:
lemmy.annoyingassholes.com 0.0.0.0
If that didn't make sense, google the terms I used and you'll find tons of tutorials.
Your suggestion is entirely missing the point. In this context, "blocking" means stopping anything from that instance from showing up in the feed when you view "All" from your home instance, not stopping yourself from navigating your web browser to that other instance.
You can also hide the NSFW content entirely, but some people are never happy.
Some phone apps do not support that feature. Couldn't find it in Memmy for Lemmy for example, so I bounced.
You can of course always do it through the web interface.
Memmy has it. Tap the community name and then the three dots in the top right. “Block community” will pop up as an option.
I’ve been using it to block Anime/Manga/Hentai communities as fast as they make ‘em. It’s never-ending with that stuff.

Eh, I understand that. Theres a whitelist approach and there’s a blacklist approach. Should you browse !all while cherrypicking blocks or should you manage your experience with subscriptions.

Communists believe in abolition of capitalism through communist revolution and eventually want to reach a Communist society. Given that such vision has not actually happened yet, Communists often support Actually Existing Socialism (AES).
Socialism is some varying degree in between that and capitalism. On the one hand, there are democratic socialists like Bernie. On the other, there’s also AES countries (e.g. USSR, China).

Most Americans definitely do not want socialism. People simply want things to be affordable, and be able to live with the social services we need readily available, and to have the freedom to do what they want. That's not socialism, that's a well functioning democracy with a strong economy.

I would recommend David Graeber or however it's spelled writing. Any time you read anyone's opinion take it with a grain of salt but Debt and Bullshit Jobs address many things, some of which can be taken as criticism of capitalism.
James C Scott is another anthropolgist and his most accessible book is probably seeing like a state. It's relatively even handed in it's critques of capitalism as it focuses on states including the USSR. It highlights quite well how markets and states can crush humanity because they have wildly different goals to people.
You probably don't want to jump right into hardcore theory so this might be a gentler intro into asking why society is the way it is and how it might be different without expressly pushing a particular political theory.

I'm on lemmy.world and there's been virtually no NSFW content I'm seeing on this account. I had to create an account on lemmynsfw.com to be able to start seeing it. Hell, I have an Instagram account specifically to see NSFW stuff and I still find my feed filled with completely SFW funny animal videos, baking creations, and woodworking. The internet does not want me to give in to my vulgar proclivities.

It's actually been super refreshing to, generally, be able to say I am a Marxist-Leninist and not immediately get downvoted into oblivion. There are still some of the kneejerk reactions to the CPC, but even then people seem more willing to engage on good-faith even with disagreements.
Create 2 accounts. One for daily reading with NSFW turned off, and another account with NSFW content for one handed reading. Problem solved.
The only trouble is that not everything NSFW is porn. Your suggestion only works if you never want to see things like potentially-disturbing news articles, fail videos where somebody gets injured, etc. either. (Or if you're a sicko who gets off on that stuff too, I suppose!)

If you decide to switch instances you can check before you make a new account. If you scroll down to the bottom of that instances homepage you'll see some options for modlog, instances, etc. Opening the instances one shows you all the instances they are federated with and then the ones they have blocked.
You could always use Lemmy.world, or you can make an account directly on Lemmy.nsfw. The Memmy app lets you switch between accounts like you could on Apollo
Lemm.ee is overloaded with it.

There doesn't appear to be much on lemmy.ml or lemmy.world (or at least it isn't popular enough to show up in the Active, Hot, or Top feed), but if you select "All" instead of "Subscribed" or "Local," stuff from instances like lemmynsfw.com etc. will start showing up.

Yeah, I tended to stay away on Reddit, too. I find myself selecting it often here, though, because there isn't enough content yet for Local and Subscribed to show new posts often enough.
I usually hover between c/news and c/politics which has a lot of content. Once football season gets going I'll be on c/nfl and c/cfb a lot too. The pet themed communities are also thriving so that is there too. What communities are lacking quality content? My RSS engine pulls in a few thousand items an hour, I might be able to contribute.

A lot of my interests are relatively niche (stuff like Linux/FOSS, DIY, bicycling/urbanism, etc.) so it isn't that surprising that some of the related communities seem to be averaging between a post a week and a post a day so far, since Lemmy as a whole isn't all that big yet. (It could also be that I haven't found the most popular community for a given topic yet, especially if it's on a different Lemmy instance.)
My subscribed feed being overly dominated by c/politics, c/world and c/technology (the communities I'm subscribed to that do have lots of content) might be part of the problem too.
You wouldn't happen to have a Pastbin or Gist or something about it, would you? I'm curious about how to set up a similar thing for myself.
I use Feedly on my phone and NewsFlow on my desktop which I use to view reddit and lemmy.
The only nsfw thing ive seen on lemmy was on lemmynsfw, afaik you can't see nsfw without being a part of that instance. Not sure what people are complaining about
If you browse the all feed you can see nsfw posts as long as your instance is federated with the nsfw ones. That's if you have nsfw enabled on your account though, which you can turn off.
I would assume sh.itjust.works isn't with them then, because i literally have never once seen naything nsfw on c/all
I just checked and y'all only have 4 blocked instances and lemmynsfw isn't one of them. You may just have NSFW turned off in your account settings.
It's definitely there. Sorting by Hot a lemmynsfw post is the 12th or so post on All right now.
I sort by Top Day though and basically never run into NSFW posts in the wild.

I've been on Lemmy.world for about a month now and have hardly seen any porn at all. Not sure what these people are looking for that is getting them so much porn.
There are a lot of commies here. I don't particularly like them but that is there right and lemmy is not and should not be pro-censorship. If somepeople don't like them they should find an instance that suits you better.
Weird, I look at posts by All fairly frequently, and I haven't run across any porn yet. It's mostly just AskLemmy or tech memes.

It's pretty rude to come into a new community and the first thing you do is complain. Not everyone is as obsessed with avoiding communist thoughts as much as US-Americans. Deal with it. As for NSFW: just switch it off.
One can hide NSFW content using Connect for Lemmy. Also using Connect, one can filter particular words in posts. I know the apps for Lemmy are young, but if we Redditors will have a teeny look around, we can find a couple of tools to help us. It may not be perfect yet, but give it some time.
Just turn off NSFW when you aren't Horny. Set default view to subscribed

Wound up creating a Lemmy account as well as this one. Still getting accustomed to it but it appears that, instead of relying solely on the mods to manage content, more control is given to the end user. As long as I can easily block trolls and other content I don't care for, I'm good.

As far as I'm aware that is correct. You could always make an account on lemmynsfw.com or on one that isn't defederated. I believe lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works are still federated with lemmynsfw.
Subscribe to a single NSFW community along with 50 or so SFW ones like I have and sort by "subscriptions" for a fun game of porn roulette. Or the other way around if you prefer 🤷

My only nsfw complaint so far is I don’t know how to allowlist some instead of blocklist all.
I’d prefer the option to find ones I’m okay with and seeing those few in my feed than have to have ALL on and block them one by one.
If that’s an option I am not yet aware of the how.

Communism is no different from full-blown capitalism. I don't get why people choose I have to be a either capitalist or socialist. There are certain things that some elements of socialism can be good for, like having free healthcare. However, when it comes to the market, you want as fewer restrictions as possible without hurting the customers or companies growth, as that can be bad for the economy.
Which leads to polluted water, a blighted environment, and corporations finding ways to rule humanity. No thanks.
Pure communism starves human nature, pure capitalism stokes and gluts the absolute darkest traits of human nature exclusively: unquenchable greed, sociopathy, competition, schadenfreude, apathy, jealousy, etc.
They are both economic extremes.
It's funny to me how we look at human nature as selfish, competitive and even cruel, when every scientific experiment shows that unless there's a strong push for those traits, humans are decent blokes who like to take care of each other.
As you said, capitalism pushes us to our worst. If we get rid of it, people will naturally build a better world.
We wouldn't have survived to become the species we are now if those were our "natural" traits. We're socal creatures, we live in communities. If anything, we are now living in the least compatible societal arrangement for our species. There is evidence that even neanderthals would care for the their eldery and dead.
Greed, in my opinion is a "modern" notion designed to propagandize and misdirect away from the true culprit of our time, and that is motive. Specifically, profit motive. Greed, much like laziness, is a made up notion by the capitalist class. It implies that you can be altruistic and "fair" with your capitalistic desires, and anyone who isn't doing as such is simply morally bankrupt.
It allows people to ascribe a personal moral failing to the capitalist, instead of analyzing the underlying motivations and structures that govern their behavior. It means people can, as temporarily embarrassed millionaires, imagine that they would never make that kind of moral failing given the opportunity.
Except, they would make that same "mistake" if they were ever given the opportunity, because capitalism demands it.
The one hard and enforced rule that would need to be in place would have to be to put a hard criminal legal cap on unchecked, society warping greed. By this I mean there are always some humans who always seek ridiculously disproportionate wealth and power to everyone else, allowing them to do so allows them to warp the culture and normalize that mindset, even making it aspirational to people that otherwise wouldn't.
Setting a maximum annual income with a 100% tax beyond a certain level, probably a couple million, would also be necessary for things to improve. Cue the millions of class traitor capitalism apologists who would cry tears of blood despite not having a small fraction of that in their bank accounts. "It would stifle investment!" oh so you'd have to include a lot more people in any large scale venture? The horror, amirite! “People wouldn't want to work hard!" because in a world where very few make that kind of income, not being able to hypothetically make 3 million a year would make everyone lazy amirite!
There are solutions, but too many peasants on the ass end of the problem are too busy defending the problem and the people that cause it, in pathetic hopes they will one day be invited to the little club of exploiters living like modern Pharoahs on the backs of most of society.
