I worked in a logistics warehouse a few years ago and whenever we had to prepare a shipment for Amazon, we had to use these brand spanking new pallets, which looked almost even better than that. It really felt like you could break a toothpick out of them and it would be sanitary.

Imagine a solid hardwood pallet, mostly oak. The supplier sends them out on a deposit. If you don't return them they charge you the full replacement fee.
Why would you do this? When you order pallets, it comes on a pallet. You do have to return the pallet, but they don't care if you return the same pallet or not.
