As a 40-year-old I, logically, understand that the N64 is pretty old now. But at the same time I am deeply offended this is how I learned about this Retro Gaming group

Wanna feel even older? the N64 launch date is almost as close to the moon landing date as it is to today... less than a year in difference

1/10 because Perfect Dark and Goldeneye don't have pride of place on the top shelf next to Majoras Mask. Epic fail move right there.

But also, why do you have so many identical copies of the same games? What's the point, or are they different region copies?

I had the same question. If I had to guess, I’d say they buy bundles of games often, where the bundle includes a game they already have but 4 games they also want. The price is right and the condition is good so why not? If a cart ever fails you have a backup right there. If the value goes up (likely) you can sell one of the copies down the line.

Edit: nvm, op replied here

Yeah it’s flea market strategy. If you try to buy one game, non-knowledgeable flea market seller thinks that game must be valuable, jacks the price up, puts it on display. But if you act like it’s just a box of old games, haggle them down on it like you just want some old games for your old system.

Yeah I couldn't reply to the post. They are variants though. My extra cartridges are on the very bottom right shelf.

Hard to tell towards the bottom but if you've got Worms Armageddon, it goes for quite a bit these days (I'll never sell my copy though! Precious memories)

6

It came out later in the N64s life and didn't sell well so there aren't as many copies.

1

The most I have paid for a game so far is $80 and this is my Not for Resale Majora's Mask

Well, those empty parts aren't going to fill themselves!

Real talk tho, very impressive. Hope you have a cool set up to play them with.

I have my childhood N64 that I've reshelled and HDMI modded.

6
lemmy.ml

Is the HDMI mod just to allow it to play on modern TVs or does it also upscale?

3

It's the Pixel FX kit. It upscales directly from the video chip

5

They are placeholders for games I may buy in the future

5

To rabbithole, I can't reply to you for some reason I get an error but they are variants, either gray variants of a colored cartridge or players choice.

4

Wow, what a collection. Out of curiosity, do you back up the games you own in case the battery dies or something happens to the cartridges?

I have ROM backups of the games but I'm not really concerned about the saves.

2

Majora's Mask will always be my all time favorite.

5
lemmy.world

Still missing Mischief Makers or is it somewhere that I’m not seeing? That’s one of the best remaining games on the 64 that I’m not seeing here.

4

I was never into N64 growing up but I really have to appreciate this stunning collection.

4
lemmy.world

Vigilante 8?!? Not sure if I see it there but that was a favourite of mine. Nice collection

4

I've got the first one but not the second. It's a really fun game.

I've got a long way to go. I have just over 100 to go.

Only 100 to go is still pretty amazing. No harvest moon yet?

It’s my girlfriends favorite game and she made me zoom in and try to find it lol

3

It's hard to choose. The Zelda games and Super Mario 64 are just classics but there are a lot of good ones.

2

Aw man, this made me miss my N64. I'm going to bring it back out and give it some love.

2 questions:

  • Why did those games at the bottom not deserve a clear plastic case?
  • What are your favourite games that are not the usual suspects?
2

Those are just duplicates, they will probably get sold eventually. A really fun game that I like is Space Station Silicon Valley. Fun fact, there is a bug in the game that makes it where you can't pick up a specific item so you can't 100% the game. I believe that there were carts released with a fix but it's not really talked about so I'm not sure. Anyway, there is a patch for the ROM that fixes the bug so I suggest playing that if you can if plan to 100% the game.

lemmy.world

Is that a mostly complete collection? What percentage would you say?

2
Coeusreply
coeus.sbs

I would say around 65% or so. I've got a long way to go.

3
lemm.ee

You wouldn't happen to be coestar would you?

BynaDreply

A video game collector who's name is also coe. I guess it was just a coeincidence.

1

The holy grail would be the gray Not for Resale Majora's Mask. It's something I'll never own and it's current value is over $9000. I'd also like Sculptors Cut but it's pushing $1000 now.

1

Jealous. N64 is the only retro console I always wanted and never managed to collect. I have NES, SNES, Genesis, Dreamcast, but never managed to get a n64.

1
Coeusreply
coeus.sbs

I collect cartridges just because CIB is way more money. I do have the boxes and manuals for about 20 games or so on storage somewhere.

3

Yeah, most definitely are, I have about 20 of my old N64 games but as a dumb kid I threw the boxes and manuals away for taking up space, makes me feel sick now. I've looked at reproduction boxes but they're not the same and also still £10-£20 a go.

1

Surprised you can see all the cartridges, thought some would be in fog from that distance.

1

The ROMs have been available online for a very long time

5

Which games don't already have roms of them floating around on the internet?
