What video games are you playing? What have you finished recently? What do you plan to play? - Video Game General Discussion Thread #21

Discussion questions:

What video games have you played recently?

What are your favorite video game genres?

Question of the week:

Are you keeping up with the Summer Game Fest announcements? Which announcemenets, trailers, gameplay footages, etc. have been your favorite so far?

Anyway, make sure to also answer the questions in the title.

Thanks!

As for me...

I'm playing OMORI and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty.

I just finished Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. One of the best games I've ever played, imho.

I plan to play The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom soon.

I'm still making my way through Tears of the Kingdom. I liked Breath of the Wild, but didn't love it. But the world feels much more alive in this new game. I'm at like 100 shrines completed and I've still only done one dungeon 😅

9

Yeah, I started the game and Tears of the Kingdom is much, much better than Breath of the Wild ever was.

But I'll continue to play till the end.

Doki Doki Literature Club, for my communist fanfic. I just hope I can still sleep at night when I'm done with it.

Lately I've been playing Destiny 2 (of fucking course, I have over 2,400 hours in-game) and Gotham Knights.

On Gotham Knights, I'm grinding for Level 80 gear on Heroic Assault. And on Destiny 2, I'm completing seasonal challenges and experiencing the seasonal storyline. I really like Season of the Deep.

I'm really fucking ecstatic and beyond excited for multiple game announcements and reveals.

I pre-ordered the Collector's Edition of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, and I'm hoping to be able to pre-order the Collector's Edition of the new upcoming Spider-Man 2 game.

I'm fucking stoked for Starfield, it looks way better than I expected. I'm getting Skyrim vibes, mixed with a bit of Fallout and Mass Effect. I didn't enjoy The Outer Worlds or No Man's Sky, but this looks like something phenomenally better.

5
lemmygrad.ml

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora honestly looks pretty good, which was unexpected for me, if I'm being honest.

I can definitely understand people's complaints about Ubisoft games, but I feel like if any game was perfect for their formula, its Avatar. Even if its just Far Cry and Assassin's Creed on Pandora, I'm beyond excited.

Currently playing Stellaris.(640h into it) Also interested in Starfield will probably pick it up around release.

2

I have Stellaris and every single expansion on Steam, but I've only played it for less than an hour, setting up my first save file.

I keep telling myself I'll get to it eventually.

3

I'm currently bouncing between Elite Dangerous, Subnautica: Below Zero, and Monster Hunter Rise. I'll probably try SF6 soon, which will be my first fighting game.

how are you enjoying ED? its been months since I played, I skyrocketed my earnings by mining, eventually got 3-4 imperial cutters when there was an event with a sale on all imperial ships, and then mainly did trading in VR.

2

I enjoy ED here and there. Now that I have a fleet carrier and most of the ships I want, it's more of a slow burn game for me that I play a little at a time. I usually explore when I'm playing more regularly, but lately I'm slogging through powerplay for exclusive parts.

It's a fun game, but the devs could do better at drawing players in and keeping their attentions. At least the flight mechanics feel amazing, because I'll take any excuse to keep doing that.

2

Boy Dyson Sphere Program has me sucked in. I'm on my second playthrough right now and inching towards getting purple cubes plugged in. I just got logistics building finally automated too.

I'm getting ready to start Cel 6 in Antimatter Dimensions as well but that game has sorts of taken a backseat.

5
lemmygrad.ml

It is! And actually like half of the mod and blueprint content for the game is all in Chinese because I guess it's pretty big over there. There's even a channel on the discord for helping with translation errors.

4

Been playing a bit of CK3 lately as well. Really enjoying Tours and Tournaments.

2
lemmygrad.ml

I'm TRYING to play Tears of the Kingdom. But I got sucked back into the infinite time pit that is Oxygen Not Included. Does anyone else here play?

4
lemmygrad.ml

Yeah, it's an awesome game! It's a survival base builder to begin with, then it turns into a big materials science experiment later in the game.

Oh boy. Firstly Pathfinder: WotR was awesome. Lately I've been on cozy/sim kicks for some reason. Lots of EA games too. I've played most of Travellers Rest (decent, EA), Sun Haven (awesome, complete), Roots of Pacha (cool/different, complete). Waiting on some updates for The Ranchers (kickstarter - EA soon). Also played some tech tests for Palia (Cozy MMO? NDA active!) For strategy/4x games, I put some time into Spellforce, Against the Storm, Age of Wonder 4, and fired up Thea 2 again. All solid games. When I want to suck at games I hit Noble Fates, Dwarf Fortress, Necesse. If I want to be a rock star I fire up Vampire Survivors, or the EA for Starship Troopers. However, the other day I picked up Diablo 4, all seventy fucking dollars of it, because some friends from across the country were digging it, and now I'm level 30+ already because games are addicting.

The struggle though - Startfield and Baldur's Gate 3 coming out within like a week of each other (or a day if you preorder). Fortunately at least Starfield is going to be on Xbox PC Game Pass, so I won't have to shell out for it until it's on sale and I want to play through it again with a whole new set of untagged achievements on steam. Like I did when I completed Skyrim, and got the special edition as a separate install for a fresh set of cheevos. Ugh.

Great time to be a gamer, but not enough time to be a gamer. :)

lemmygrad.ml

EA... games? As in Electronic Arts? I thought their games sucked?

Also, heard good things about Spellforce and Age of Wonder 4, though I'm not really an RTS fan and I don't know if I want to start playing RTSes again (it's been over a decade since I did, admittedly).

Early Access

3

EA as in early access, sorry for invoking electronic arts. AOW4 and Spellforce aren't RTS.. they're more 4x, with turn based combat. Check out some videos on them and you'll see how they play.

ToTK almost done! Just switched to playing on Linux Mint (Yuzu) and it even runs smoother than Windows! I might not finish though, I feel like I played my fill.

And I'm playing Citizen Sleeper. It was in a top 10 games of 2022 list on a podcast I like and it's great but there is a lot of reading.

I played the new SpongeBob, Cosmic Shake earlier. It's a worthy successor to the series.

And I played Cassette Beasts, great spin on monster collecting which is on game pass, steam, xbox, and switch.

As far as summer games fest, I'm excited for "Stray Gods: the role playing musical." "Beastieball" and "Despelote" look great too. Despelote was described by the creator as "like a half-remembered part of his childhood" when Ecuador was first allowed to compete in the (Football) World Cup.

My wish list has gotten massive between the Wholesome Direct, Devolver Direct, and the Intel Next show.

4
lemmygrad.ml

Citizen Sleeper 2 was just announced!! I'm so incredibly happy and hype it was "successfull" enough. Literally made my whole month probably

2

btw excellent taste or rather similar taste to mine c: Also excited for Stray Gods and I'm still in the process of checking games out from the last few days, there are so many!

In case anyone doesn't know this site already and wants to check stuff out without watching the whole presentations: https://2023.gamesrecap.io/

I need to get back to games I started recently like Boltgun, Terra Nil, but my time is limited. Hearthstone battlegrounds is my "I finally have a min" game or "the kids are in bed and I'm finally watching TV but need to feed my ADHD" game lol. I'm into the current battlegrounds update, I'm interested to see what the new patch has for changes.

Terra Nil is super chill if you're looking for something to pass the time with.

I love the look and feel it 40K: Boltgun, little hard to play on the steam deck but it's just a learning curve I think.

4
lemmygrad.ml

40K: Boltgun is supposed to be the best boomer shooter in a while now.

I plan to play it myself.

I'm still in the hell that is FFXIV. :P

Really enjoyed the last patch, the Trial fight was pretty good and I adored how they wrapped up the Normal raid series for this expansion.

3
lemmygrad.ml

I never got past the first arc or part of Final Fantasy XIV but I did enjoy it; problem is that I lost my subscription at a certain point.

2

Ah that sucks. The first part is the roughest and it starts getting really good in the next expansion.

3
lemmygrad.ml

I'm balls deep into Tears of the Kingdom right now, but also taking breaks by getting back into New Pokemon Snap. I'm a little disappointed in myself im not actively playing any retro games.

I can't believe i haven't head of those games considering it's something I'd be totally into. Just put it on my flash cart!

2
lemmygrad.ml

There's a new remastered version for the Nintendo Switch (and now Steam) called ActRaiser Renaissance.

You'll love it.

It helps that the ActRaiser games are quite famous and have a loyal cult following.

2
klieg2324reply

Thanks for the recommendation! Honestly my favorite part of retro gaming is getting recs for "new" games and getting the day one experience on a game that's been out forever. I'm always torn between remastered versions, because after I play one it's harder to play the original on classic hardware!

2

Yeah, I'd play Silent Hill 2 but now it's getting a remake and same with Metal Gear Solid 3 now.

So, at this point, I just won't play the original versions.

The second one where they discarded the citybuilder concept seemed to lose what made the concept unique.

1

It doesn't really do that per se.

Edit: Nvm, I thought you were talking about another game and didn't check the context. Sorry!

Slay the Spire has been one of my favorites for years, and recently I've been using the "Spire with Friends" mod. It allows up to 6 players to link up their runs to try to win. The added Courier map location is what pulls it all together, allowing you to spend gold to send cards and relics to your teammates.

In a normal Spire run, most of your gold is probably being used to remove your basics in shops. In a multiplayer run, there is a larger incentive to hold off on doing so, since a well timed delivery can save another player from certain death.

lemmygrad.ml

“Tainted grail: conquest” has similar gameplay done in a horror Arthurian fantasy setting. There are some really good Rogue-style deck builders out there.

2

I hope you find a way to fix it or work around it, steam just like so frustratingly buggy at times. Have you tried putting it compatibility mode? I'm not sure if that will help or not.

1

Lmao that's not what the game is called, but the gameplay of that game is like that.

I just put "you read that right" because it's very uncommon for a Restaurant Management game to be a Role-Playing Game as well.

I just recently got back from vacation so I missed the release of Street Fighter 6 but have been playing that now and it's really fun. Might be the best Street Fighter game on release (SFV was terrible on release) with tons of content, the characters are well made and I like that they added a different control scheme (called modern) that makes it a bit easier for people new to fighting games to play it.

Other than that, I got back into playing Dead by Daylight with friends, we usually take a couple months break and come back to it when there's new content.

3
cayde6mlreply

I have Street Fighter 6 Gold Edition on my PS5 as well but haven't played it much yet.

2
lemmygrad.ml

I've heard great things about Dyson Sphere Program... though Factorio bores me to tears.

3

Pretty much, but I would also add that the aesthetics of Factorio don't do it for me, in all honesty.

2

I need to get back into Hunt the Night, except now I'm about to replay X-COM 2 a little when I get around to it. I also been doing some small stuff in Guild Wars 2. I also was also having fun with Pillars of Eternity. I kind of just jump all over the place.

3
lemmygrad.ml

I want to really play PoE2 since it looks really pretty! I just need to like, finish the first game first.

2
lemmygrad.ml

I've been playing Diablo 4. Pretty fun so far, but an arpg can only innovate so much.

3

Honestly considering the RMAH fiasco of Diablo 3, I'd almost rather they not try to "innovate"

2

Playing a bit of CoD World at War. This is my absolute favorite CoD. You get to mow down Nazi bastards by the hundreds, even the American storyline is at least killing Japanese Fascists. Finally a CoD game that doesn’t glorify Imperialism🙏🥹. I also play UFC 4 because I love to box, also finishing Mass Effect 2, gonna head to Mass Effect 3. Lastly, I’m playing Fallout New Vegas and am kinda bored w the Big MT DLC, idk when I’ll get back to it but I have a lvl 24 Unarmed Caesar’s Legion playthrough that is really good(I have a 9 luck, so casinos are an easy payday)

3

Started playing Star Wars Force Unleashed, because I remembered it exists. Rage quit at the level where you need to pull down a star destroyer, because whoever designed that level needs a stern talk. In general the game is a fairly fun slasher, but then a boss level would start and it just because a pain. The only boss fight that wasn't annoying as heck was in Cloud City, because at least the bloke takes damage and you can yeet him over the parapet, for example.

After rage quitting, went to play some No Man's Sky again, following the current expedition, just like comrade PunsAndRoses.

To answer the question in the OP, I no longer keep up with the sales, because all of the game stores have stopped taking transactions from Russia (at least without some tomfoolery which I don't care for). So it's been mostly going through what I already have.

2
lemmygrad.ml

i'm most of the way through Zelda: TotK, which has been quite enjoyable so far, but it's on the back burner now so i can focus on Satisfactory. I really want to get a train network set up in that, but it will be a little while yet before i have that unlocked.

2

Resident Evil 4 and Lemmy Minecraft Server.

None in specific. It depends more on the game. But I noticed that when I was a teenager I was way more into FPS games like CSS. Now I'm tired of them. The last I tried was R6 Siege, and the Ranked pressure was just too much for me.

No, anything special?

2

Been playing a lot of TFT (Teamfight Tactics) recently, especially since the new set came out.

2

Finished GTA Vice City Stories on my phone, story and writing are the weakest of any 3D GTA but the soundtrack is the best out of all of them. None of the missions aside from the "In the Air Tonight" concert finale to the Phil Collins missions are particularly memorable though.

Mostly now I'm playing some of my nostalgic PS1 favorites like BattleTanx: Global Assault and Arcade/Neo Geo games like Cadillacs and Dinosaurs since those can be finished in one sitting as I use infinite credits. I'm playing them on the Anbernic RG35XX. I got it on sale for ₱2,350 ($40 tax and shipping included) and I've set it up with GarlicOS and the "tiny best set go" romset.
