I've heard it was a popular discussion place people would go to. Even called the front page of the internet because it was the first and best source for compiled news and information. Its CEO had some quotes that showed how important free flow of information was.

"I don't think we should silence people just because their viewpoints are something we disagree with. There is value in the conversation, and we as a society need to confront these issues. This is an incredibly complex topic, and I'm sure our thinking will continue to evolve."

"We are not the thought police. It's not the role of a private company to decide what people can and cannot say."

He was also forward thinking in designing an open forum, controlled by individuals.

"Our approach to governance is that communities can set appropriate standards around language for themselves. Many communities have rules around speech that are more restrictive than our own, and we fully support those rules."

Wait, that sounds more like the Fediverse.

A Reddit is when you destroy a social media platform because you're angry with its users. It's a common billionaire or wannabe billionaire move.

20

One of those dead websites like Digg, MySpace, Livejournal etc.

1
lemmy.world

Not just porn! Since reddit only has one such tag you can apply to posts, many subreddits were using the NSFW tag for a wider variety of reasons such as spoilers, content which may contain unsettling material (aka "triggers"), and more!

The stoners on Reddit got screwed - many of the weed subs got the banhammer, and the rest got NSFW'd because spez wants Reddit as G-rated as Disney for the IPO.

47

To be fair, there's been a site wide spoiler tag for a few years now, but yeah before it was introduced people used NSFW for that if a community didn't allow actual NSFW stuff or whatever

20
lemmy.world

It’s not all NSFW. The Synology community I followed went full NSFW in protest and I can still view their subreddit. I cannot view subreddits such as watchitfortheplot. So somehow Reddit is differentiating.

11
minnowreply
lemmy.world

Well I know they forced some subreddits go back to SFW if it was obvious the NSFW was just to protest. Maybe that's the case for the subreddit you're looking at?

4

NSFW means no ads as well.

I also remember the announcement was sexually explicit content won’t be served through the api, so they must have a way to differentiate then.

3
Ducksreply

How does reddit tell the difference? Is it just nsfw communities not in the api or all nsfw posts? There is no discrepancy at least in the UI between NSFW gore and NSFW tits.

18

Also between the two I’d say porn is decidedly more advertiser friendly

9

users are forced to log in on the official Reddit app if they want to view NSFW content on mobile.

the OP literally said it's for all NSFW contents.

6
lemmy.world

This is the true final blow to third party apps.

I noticed they did something similar to the mobile website. Even with appropriate content blockers there’s absolutely no way you can see sexually explicit content on mobile without their app.

Or use old.reddit.com too.

Interesting calculus here. Before the r/pocalyspe I'd have said old-reddit was on a 3 month clock to being summarily retired

They also likely lost way more users than they anticipated through the blackouts, and might just let old-reddit be to protect their numbers until the IPO. As long as its not on default Main page, I doubt the advertisers will care. They'll kill it when they can do so quickly and quietly

Honestly, it seems what Reddit has been doing lately is far worse than anything Digg ever did. 🤷‍♂️ Digg basically just made a bunch of bad design decisions primarily but not entirely to please investors, and the majority of changes were not welcomed by the community.

Reddit is straight up disrespecting their userbase and telling them to suck a fat one and deal with it, holding to their miserable decisions while openly suggesting their userbase is too weak to go anywhere else... And also doing so primarily to please misguided investors.

I was also there since 2008, and was a heavy user. I've checked in a few times in the past month (a lot of my more niche communities haven't moved over yet), but I don't comment or interact anymore. Once Relay dies it's off my phone (it's already lost the homescreen shortcut), and if old.reddit dies I'm done forever.

5

Years ago I had a successful website based on the API of a growing site which has since become pretty large. The main founder/CEO was pretty prominent in the community at the time and clearly thought that he was an amazing person. His attitude reminds me of how Splez has acted to the Apollo dude... rather than think "hey, thanks for adding something to the community, we appreciate it and could work together" he seemed to think we were interlopers who stole something from them and were using it unfairly. I think for both of them there's a feeling that successful outside developers demonstrate the CEO's inadequacy at meeting the needs of users. Plus on a personal level, Splez is this nerd who looks like he's from an Advice Animal meme and the Apollo guy looks like he could be on a TV show.

The market is already pretty saturated, though. There are so many other places to view this type of content and in a better format than a link aggregator.

Like, wouldn't Pornhub be a more streamlined way to look at porn? Or whatever other porn website?

I never understood the appeal of porn on reddit. I always just blocked the porn subs and went about my business.

Having said all that, I totally agree that it should be allowed or perhaps even encouraged. It's a free and open system - let the people do what they want. Even if I personally don't understand the appeal.

1

People are pretty fond of the grassroots movement for independent creators to strike their own on reddit. Onlyfans is a good website for creators to monetize their content, but I don't believe it does much for growing their following. Pornhub has gotten better for smaller creators but so many things are lost in their terrible tagging and indexing that they're lost in the flood.

Topical community environments like reddit on the other hand let's them show their specific content to a group that's primed to like it. Mods are keeping the focus narrowed, so you're less likely to compete against the same reposted clip from a decade ago that has little connection to the tags affixed. Pretty similar reasons for why it did so well on Tumblr as well.

2

You're probably right. I think it matters more to content creators than consumers? Like, posting porn to Reddit is often advertising? And like anything, people must get some form if satisfaction interactions on specialty subs. You can't just go to Pornhub and upload your favorite foot porn, right? Get upvotes, get that tiny dose of dopamine. Get to comment about how beautiful the girl is, hoping maybe she'll like your complement more than the other thirsty guys'.

Social media, man. Interaction, even meaningless... it's its own drug.

2

in a better format than a link aggregator.

Wouldn't that also apply to any image content then (like comics, memes, infographics, etc)? It doesn't stop it from being popular. The important thing is simply finding a site that allows your specific content and that doesn't heavily compress it.

A few weeks ago when I still used Reddit via old.Reddit I was constantly getting switched to the new Reddit. It was infuriating.

12

That makes sense though considering that they wanted to kill the 3rd party apps too. I'd imagine that for desktop users it shouldn't matter much wether you're using the redesign or old.reddit - they'll be able to collect the same data and show the same ads.

2

In January Reddit told third party app developers that there wouldn't be any API changes this year. Maybe in the future, but they definitely wouldn't charge for it this year.

Similarly, Spez said that old Reddit isn't going away.

To me, that's enough to consider it a realistic possibility.

I wouldn't necessarily say shills. I can't say I know the ins and outs of app development but I'm sure it could come about that a particular dev doesn't have the know how or capital to start a new project.

-2
zepporeply
lemmy.world

The Apollo dev said $2.50 a month per user. Not that bad really if reddit had given developers enough time to change their apps and the sign-up process. He got screwed by already having an existing Premium that people had pre-paid too.

6
zurohkireply
lemmy.fmhy.ml

It's $2-3/month, but that's assuming all your existing users convert to paid subscriptions.

The issue devs had was that it was going to mostly be the heaviest users who would be willing to pay for a subscription. The people who spend many hours per day using the app and rack up $20/month in API charges.

7

Yeah, they would have to include some limits so a user wasn't costing the app developer money. Not all existing users would have to sign up, though - people would just have to be required to sign up and pay to use the app in the future. It's certainly quite a disadvantage for 3rd party app users have to pay while the official app is free.

1

Yeah thanks for the accurate number. It wasn't as ridiculous as I recalled. Should've checked it first.

Still unreasonably high (checked the Apollo post, he calculated it would be multiple times more than what average reddit user currently brings to table).

The purpose of my comment was to point out that the mentioned 10 million dollars would mean 4 million active users if it's monthly fee.

Theoretically anyone could make their own app with the api and pay the api cost directly.

1

Porn is the reason, the internet is so popular. It's basically a driving force!

I must be a mod of a sub without me realising then. I’m using Apollo via side loading and NSFW still works.

Unless it’s banned just on the ones like narwhal and dystopia?

Is there a way to check which subs you moderate?

1

It is ultimately a way to further cripple 3rd part apps. Thus, making the official Reddit app look better by comparison. It’s not certain if Reddit will get rid of porn, because while porn sub-reddits don’t generate ad revenue, a not insignificant portion of Reddit’s user-base visit porn sub-reddits, making Reddit a good one-stop-shop for a user’s media related need. So while porn doesn’t generate ad revenue, it brings users, users who also visit other non-porn sub-reddits that do.

25

PSA: Hardened browsers (desktop or mobile) are still an option. I know it isn't but it would be difficult to convince me that the official app is better than even that.

4

Fediverse is strangely prudish. Not much porn, and when it shows up, instances defederate from it.

4

Porn works on Stealth available on f-droid if you switch the source to web scrapping. Not that I advocate using Reddit right now ever again.

19

Don't care about this.

There was this great community on r/medicalgore where people shared pics of symptoms of their health problems or photos made during their operations. This allowed everyone to fear less about own health problems. The whole sub was always NSFW.

19
lemmy.one

It is possible on Stealth which is an accountless option with options to use a teddit instance. Little reason to even have an account anymore on reddit, and for those who say subs. Stealth lets you have a feed too. And those that say saving comments or posts Stealth lets you do that too. All locally and exportable.

If you continue using reddit on the phone why let reddit keep harvesting account specific data while just lurking? Go use stealth instead over doing stuff like patching past third party apps and logging in and letting them track your activity then being drawn to add value to the platform through engagement by being tempted to upvotes, downvote, and post.

1

Yeah, it's very barebones, but I have no intention of scrolling through /r/all any more or interacting with the community so it meets my needs. Days of commenting with the reddit community and giving account based click impressions are done.

Pretty much there set to automatically launch any reddit search result from stealth running the reddit instance so I avoid going directly to reddit. Sort like a smoking patch to tapering off reddit. Using past third party app with the account functionality feels too much like using it as normal, and even closer to falling into commenting again.

1

For science I just pulled up a few long-established pornography-specific subreddits (photo, video, and prose-based) in the current version of RedReader, the app which has been spared the axe by Reddit for now. I can confirm that the NSFW subreddits and individual posts still seems to be working and viewable in that app.

EDIT: Disregard, per reply comments this won't work after an update. :-P

18

it's such a stupid thing. like reddit is not earning anything anyway if I am going there only for porn. like advertisers are not going to put ads in NSFW subs anyway. what's the point of this change

15

RIP Boost. Until we meet again in Lemmy.

Mine still works, unpatched, NSFW and all, like nothing happened. I'm a "mod" of my own private subreddit, though.

I think so, I finally had to uninstall Boost today after it wouldn't load posts anymore. I was surprised it was working this long past July 1st even though they said it wasn't.

My boost loaded a lemme plug and stopped working, but now is working again. Idk when it will die, just trying to get ahead of it.

@L4s In mobile browser still works, but they already said that the mobile website will be killed.

And people are still unsure if they will kill old.reddit

1

@CMLVI @L4s Reddit gonna kill whatever makes them don't collect enough user data as they want.
My guess old.reddit will be next after killing the mobile website.

Source? Not that I don't believe it, but I've seen it thrown around quite a few times and I can't find where did they say that.

1

Well, that’s not really a clear statement but close enough. They’re really trying to piss off as many users as possible huh.

1

For a moment I thought it said Digg…. Or tumbler. Probably Digg.

2

Only reason I still use reddit was for the large comps of stuff I liked. Guess infinity is gone for me forever now.

2

Well, actually, you can view it through Infinity.

1

Mobile browser still works fine for me. Is that not the case for everyone?

1

You can't look at Reddit at all on third party apps now. Or did I miss a change to their API change?

It's still quite a large platform, and porn is one of its strong suits.

3

Is this really a problem? It's not like the internet is begging for more porn.

-1

Why would you look for porn on Reddit of all places? There's lots of porn and the internet is a big place. Reddit is a sorry place to post and view it in the first place.
