Low latency remote desktop for Linux VMs without GPU?

Hello!

Years ago I found that nomachine was really good to set up remote desktops that felt nearly native.

However, nomachine is proprietary and I was wondering if there were any solutions in 2023 that were more recommended for running a remote desktop on a cloud vm / VPS / proxmox vm.

Unfortunately it seems that Sunshine requires a GPU, otherwise I would be using it together with moonlight.

Rustdesk

Holy smokes, thank you so much! I setup the server on one of my VPS on a docker in 5 minutes, and it worked amazingly. As a professional who has struggled with teamviewer and anydesk, I think you just gave me the solution I was looking for.

I have not gone through the reddit post yet, but will do so as soon as I get back home from work. But do I have to be concerned if I am self hosting rustdesk and using it only locally within my home network?

Depends on how much you care about them making changes to your system without your consent.

I'm using x2go to access my remote KDE session for a couple of years now - it runs over ssh tunnel and supports audio, generally im pretty happy with the performance, the only disadvantage that I come across is a lack of mobile app and the session sometimes can be a bit flakey
