Reddit hated emojis, how does Kbin feel?

Seemed like emojis in posts / comments would get downvoted to oblivion on Reddit. I don’t see the same thing on Kbin (or other instances / services).

I'm in the "Use em if you wanna as they can easily accentuate points you try to make, and can help with understanding tone, but if you put more than like...3-4 max in 1 comment you should probably rethink your life" camp.

Agree… or the comments that are solely emoji. Unless it’s meme I’d rather see actual thoughts in text format.

I’ve violated my own rule like 5 times in the past two days. 👀 ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I am fine with them, especially since they can be used to indicate the tone of a comment that would otherwise be difficult to discern. However, when you do that every other word as emoji thing (like the various copypasta that go around) or you put hand claps after every word, then I will hate you for the rest of my life and haunt you from the grave.

I'm still so used to being downvoted for emojis, I lowkey get worried to use them here 🥲

Look I grew up with MSN, I was waiting for years for emojis to come back into use. Let me have this 😁

Oh gods, I missed those icons. It just made me realise that it's not like I dislike emojis, I just don't like how they look.

I thought that emojis didn't fit in with the aesthetics of reddit and they don't fit in with the aesthetics of kbin either. That said, emoji hate on reddit was dumb and performative because it wasn't about a slight aesthetic preference, it was about seeming cool to the ingroup by attacking people for being normies

There was a bit of discussion about this on the Lemmy side a few weeks back and the consensus seems to be: you do you.

How refreshing to know. I would have guessed lemmy to be more in keeping with standard reddit, since they got the bigger influx and definitely partake more in the shitpost behavior. It seems the people who made being a dickhead their whole persona really have stayed behind in majority.

Personally, I don't care hard enough unless it's several in a row, which I do forsee happening, since it was used solely to annoy in the past. So...not really looking forward to those, but as long as it's used normally.

I'm enjoying an emoticon renaissance :)

2

We've definitely got our share of trolls but I think that's just par for the course when numbers balloon like they have. I've seen a lot of "Reddit" behaviours being called out and nipped in the bud which is encouraging. Could still definitely do with less people trying to make "sublemmy" a thing though 🙄

Honestly I rely on emojis and emoticons to try and indicate tone so it's been a bit of a relief to not have it be looked down on here. It's hard enough trying to communicate in text already!

Just use them with tact and I don't think anyone really cares - on reddit or on here

Judging by the comments it looks like all the extreme emoji haters are the toxic people who refuse to leave Reddit. I love that for the most part the people that left Reddit and are active in Kbin/Lemmy aren't the super toxic ones that frequented Reddit, it's really a breath of fresh air

Same! I lurked a lot on Reddit because even trivial comments felt like they’d get picked at (or more often just not result in additional conversation). Here I feel much more comfortable typing and not second guessing. Feels good.

5

Me too! I was on reddit for over a decade but mostly just lurked. Here I feel way more inclined to comment, maybe because it's smaller?

3

Yeah I lurked for a long time on Reddit since one of my first posts on there got downvoted into oblivion by said toxic users, so I was afraid to post or comment for a long time. Here is definitely a lot more comfortable

3

Emojis are part of how people speak online, I always found it weird how big a deal people made out of people using them on Reddit

8

I actually think they're a lot less annoying than some of the other attempted expressive shortcuts common to Reddit.

🙄 > /s
😝 > jk
🤣 > lol
🤦‍♂️ > *facepalm*

And so on. They're obnoxious if they're used like punctuation or in place of entire words and sentences, but to indicate tone I think they're great! 👍

5

I'm so used to non-emoji text that they feel like extreme over-emoting

It has never been a problem. You do you. I use them myself from time to time. On IM I even use them all the time. I think people have less of a problem with emojis themselves but more with people who use them in a stupid way. You know what I mean.

You: [Make a well thought out argument for X]

Them: Oh! You really believe X?!?!?! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I just won the discussion. Delete your account, you are blocked, byebye!

4

They aid in communication, especially to convey tone, or sarcasm, or simply the user's feelings. What's not to ❤️?

4

I'm OK with them. There's definitely such a thing as overusing them, but I think they can be useful for conveying tone.

I made a friend recently who likes to use the plant emoji. It's really sweet and refreshing, and it feels calming somehow. She's very nice to me 🌱

Idc for their usage , I use them myself sometime ❕

Also OOTL wy reddit hates them so much

I'll say this though : if you ever catch me use 🙃 , take me out back and shoot me like Old Yeller ‼️

3

I think reddit things that emojis are cringe because "normies" use them 🙄

2

Us vs. them is as bad as ever. Just use emoji if you want, but don’t overuse them? Live and let live I say.

3

Emojis are fine as a general thing; it's when the tween memelords can't post one without at least four more in a row that I get disgusted.

There should be a decent ratio of actual content to emojis.

3

I find them annoying when overused (using multiple in one comment, especially the trend of putting one between every single word) and when the comment is only emoji, but they're fine in moderation.

2

Eh, I don’t really like them but that’s mainly just the art style. I didn’t mind when forums would have smiley faces and stuff because people usually didn’t overdo them.

2

😬 Is a fun one. Or if someone’s doing something sketchy / kinda nonsensical but I don’t plan on intervening, I’ll go with 👀 🍵 or 💅

Do we really want to communicate in hieroglyphs again?

2

in fact, emojis can really help to convey tone to multilingual speakers when you are saying something with a complicated mood 👍

I don’t really use emojis because hunting specific ones down can feel like a chore and I wouldn’t even know which ones were appropriate. That said, I could care less if others use them.
