Why are gym rats called rats instead of Gorillas?

"Rat" insinuates that they are always there and can't get rid of them. A gym rat is someone who is always at the gym.

Have a kid jump into their enclosure.

I always thought it was because you go to the gym and hit the threadmill kind of like rats run on the wheel ?
