A size comparison of the universe that really puts things into perspective

When I enrolled for my first astrophysics class. my professor gave us a size comparison of the universe. He claimed that the course would be back breaking, so before we got into it he wanted to share some thoughts and images of how small and inconsequential we really are in the grand scheme of things. Today I feel liike sharing that days learnings with you guys.

If, hypothetically, the Earth were to explode tomorrow, the universe would not even get a whiff of it. Let's take a look at a few comparisons.

First, check out this image of the Earth:

Let's compare Earth to Jupiter and Saturn:

At this point, the Earth already seems pretty tiny. Compared to the Sun - we practically become a speck of dust

You might be thinking, "the Sun is gigantic!" But actually, it's not. Especially when we compare it to other stars in the Milky Way, such as Arcturus, which absolutely dwarfs our Sun:

And finally TON 618, the biggest black hole ever discovered. Not even a comparison lol. It's basically 1/10th the size of the milkway.

Now you might think, "Wow, the Milky Way is such an impressive galaxy!" Sure, it's vast, but there are millions of galaxies throughout the universe, making ours seem rather ordinary.

TLDR The Earth's destruction would hardly have any impact on the universe. It's a humbling perspective and reminder that we are merely a tiny part of something much, much larger. Keep this in mind whenever you feel that your problems or ego are taking over the world - in reality, we're all just farts in the wind.
