Please let us know where the term klan is still being used, so that we can update it. Afaik I changed everything in the…

Sorry I never got back to you. My app crashed whenever I hit the notification button.

It seems both the clan-spelling issue and the notification issue have both been fixed though. Keep up the good work.

Feels like everyone hates something when it's new but eventually when it grows on them they wonder how it could ever be…

To be clear, I definitely don’t hate the name. It’s a nice name. It’s just used by other popular properties (splatoon and x-men) which would make it difficult for this app to be a first-result when googling “Spyke.”

I’m just making a tactical point that a different name could help the app grow faster. Nothing about the aesthetic of the name.

As of today, Spyke is not common on Google and easily confused with Skype. But that’s for users to change by making it…

My concern was that a lot of other properties and companies are already named “Spyke” spelled exactly the same as this app. “Reddit” may not have been aesthetically pleasing, but it was unique.

This app will have a harder time becoming popular on Google searches when it’s competing with a splatoon character and an x-man of the same name, “Spyke.”

Regardless, I’m rooting for this app.

I see what you mean. That could potentially hurt the growth of this app. But again, the devs are from india so the nome…

Exactly.

But it’s not so much a nomenclature issue. It’s just important to research a potential name of any company or product you come up with to make sure other people aren’t using it, or at least if they are, that they’re small enough to not matter. It’s clear from Spyke’s devs using the word “klan” and naming their company “Spyke” that they didn’t do this, whether they’re in India, the USA, or anywhere else.

If they did look it up ahead of time, they chose to ignore that “Spyke” is already used by plenty of multinational products. Splatoon is a Nintendo property from Japan. The X-Men is an American property. No clue about the other Spyke companies but still. No matter which country your in, a search for “Spyke” will likely take you to the characters owned by multi-billion dollar, world-wide beloved franchises rather than a new start-up app.

Personally i like the app name. Spyke does seem like a skype typo tho lmao. As my auto correct is very adamant about it.

The name is totally fine from an aesthetic standpoint. The issue is that a ton of other, much bigger products have already used it.

Again, I tried to search “Spyke” first and was bombarded with random stuff from a splatoon character, to multiple companies names Spyke. But when I searched Spyke’s competition, Lemmy, I found the Reddit alternative immediately. My feedback is just saying that this will absolutely hurt Spyke’s chances of growing.

Especially while starting out, there’s no chance that this app can compete with the popularity of a splatoon character or an x-men, so those will always dominate the search results.

The k/c clan thing as been discussed to death. The devs are from India and were unaware of the connotations. There was…

I wasn’t aware of the “klan” thing being discussed. That said, hopefully the dev team takes this as a learning moment to look up whether a potential name is already used for something, since that’s also the same issue with “Spyke” as a name.

And of course, they certainly can choose to name their app whatever they like. But if they choose a generic, used to death name like “Spyke” it’ll hurt their searchablity severely.

I’m not trying to attack the devs or something. I’m giving them constructive feedback. If they choose a more original name, they’ll be easier to search, and that’ll help their app succeed. No need to get defensive.
