There was this news article once when ₹1 coins were made from a cupro-nickel alloy. When melted, the value of the alloy itself was ₹3.

People would melt the coins and sell the metal, leading to something like an infinite money glitch.

RBI changed the alloy to ferritic stainless steel in future batches of coins so that the coins would become harder to melt, and it was worth less than the actual currency.

But it's the same premise. People literally chose to melt the coins instead of using it as a currency.
