Ive never understood the act of proposing in public. Complete attention-grabbing play. Like any of those people are going to remember and/or give a shit.
You're not alone in thinking that, I've always thought the same. Not only is it attention-grabbing, but it also puts the person being proposed to in an awkward spot if they're not sure if they want to say yes or not. Like, imagine the embarrassment if they said no? But now it's in front of dozens of people cheering/clapping etc. so pressure is pretty high. I wouldn't like being put in that position myself. I feel like proposals should be more personal and intimate, between the two people involved. Everyone else can celebrate later at the engagement party.
It's like when you were a kid and wanted to spend the night or go do something with a friend, you bring the kid with you so they feel more inclined to say yes.

Ah yes not a single person batting an eye and clapping or whatever. The way it should be.

Yep, that's a weird place to propose.
