I've been in a bit of a break from running 5e DnD and have been blitzing through some other RPGs mostly as one shots to keep things fresh, honestly they've all been great in their own way:

• Black Sword Hack (Moorcock/Lieber OSR sword and sorcery)
• Black Hack (OSR)
• Mörk Borg (Doom Metal OSR)
• Mothership (Sci-Fi Horror)
• Mekton Zeta (Anime Mecha)
• Age of Sigmar: Soulbound (Heroic Fantasy)

Yeah I've definitely had situations where its been useful, lime double checking safety critical algorithms or making sure I haven't missed anything obvious. But a lot of the time in my current team it just ends up feeling redundant, especially since it's a small dev team.

Didn't even realise this had happened, I always liked that pub! Classic Wolverhampton though, there is a history of 'Accidental' fires...

Yeah its a really nice system, combat has a nice flow to it and characters can feel pretty fragile, but also appropriately strong, we'll see with time how the progression holds up but it's been really fun so far, it really catches that Moorcock Sword and Sorcery Itch 👌

I need to do something similar, I'm probably one of the minority who doesn't have an issue with the new citadel wash formula, but the when washing larger models it gets a bit impractical 😆 I need to bite the bullet and just make a 3l bottle of washes... 😆

Right? I was obsessed with the ship multiplayer mode 👌

OSR one would be cool, but there are a few of those around already

It can certainly be expensive, depending on pricing and region, but if you look at some guides online for cheap ways to get into it there should be plenty of advice 😊i'ved certainly had lots of fun, drunk and chill games with friends for sure.

The current edition of 40k 10th edition has just released and all of the rules for all the factions and the main game can be downloaded for free so that should help you out. They also have a new game mode called combat patrol which is intended for new players and smaller games (so less investment) they have fixed unit selections but the rules are balanced for the smaller size so it can be very fun you can find the combat patrol rules on their website too.

Best bet would be to:

• pick a faction based on what's cool
• buy a combat patrol from an independent retailer (non-official shops usually have a slight discount). / if you would rather get paper minis first that works too
• assemble miniatures -try out the game use household items as terrain -if you like it, consider painting them
