LibDem leader Ed Davey wrote a letter to Keir Starmer

Reply in thread

I agree that Ed is a very competent and credible leader fronting possibly the most professional parties in Westminster (despite the stunts and gaffs). However I feel like you are parroting smears on Polanski and to and extent Corbyn.

The hypnosis breasts incident was instigated by a Sun journalist and repeated every time he reaches any headlines by the right wing press. For a story that was largely fabricated.

The Corbyn party I feel you have more of a point as they seem quite unorganised and split (and they have so much overlap with Green that there isn't all that much point). But didn't they cut association with the guy questioning trans rights?

Just to add as well, there are other leftist options in the country who are doing quite well and currently seem pretty competent, though they are not English.

Wales 20mph: Calls made for 1,500 roads to revert to 30mph

Reply in thread

As someone who lives in Wales and drives, cycles and walks around daily, I think this is a great policy, but poorly communicated and has been a target by populist politicians which has fed into the discontent.

Many people speed and break the limit anyway regardless of the speed limit. In my experience about 80% of cars will be sticking to 20 - either abiding by the limit or stuck behind someone keeping to it. The majority of people speeding will only speed up to ~30mph, which will be less than what they'll be speeding if the limit was at 30 originally.

It may vary by council, but I personally can't think of any roads near me that could do with reverting back up to 30 (that haven't already). Some main roads will still be 20, but then there are schools and residential on these roads which doesn't make sense to revert - but some people will still complain.

Personally I don't think this policy will ever have national popular support. It is a policy that directly affects someone's day to day rather than a stat which makes it a perfect candidate for people to complain about (potholes are similar). This is despite polling also saying that the vast majority support 20 outside their own house (but outside other people's houses should be reverted?).

I am kinda sick of how much this policy is brought up. It seems like every month there is a new article critiquing the limit and it is getting quite repetitive.

Kemi Badenoch: Argentinian president Javier Milei would be ‘template’ for my government

This is a pretty scary statement. It seems like the Conservatives (the official opposition) see Reform as their opposition and are just trying to counter their policy by trying to sit further right. This seems bonkers to me and will only normalise this sort of discourse, also pushing other parties further right.

I do wonder if we had a voting system and parliament which encouraged party collaboration we would have such issues.

The mist of the www

Reply in thread

I was having a chat about this with a UX guy. His argument for using a similar flow was that the username/email will have to be validated at the point of registration anyway so you might as well make it easier for the user when the email is wrong. I couldn't really refute this logic.

If you throttle both login and registration, then surely the risk is minimised while keeping the user happy?

New York sues Valve for 'letting children and adults illegally gamble' with loot boxes

Reply in thread

Believe it or not, Valve do actually make games too, and these games do contain lootboxes. From the article:

...attorney general's office called out Counter-Strike 2, Team Fortress 2, and Dota 2 specifically

They have been burnt for this in some other countries in the past and so they have developed alternatives which are location specific. Not sure if New York would've been too specific a place for this to be enabled or if they just didn't care enough here.

Valve do have a history of popularising shading monetisation techniques e.g. battle passes. They are better than a lot of the competition, but far from being the saint that a lot of gamers believe them to be.

Voting age to be lowered to 16 in UK by next general election

Reply in thread

Good news! Reversing the mayoral and PC changes were just in the news last week! https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2025/jul/10/ministers-propose-voting-changes-for-mayoral-elections-in-devolution-bill

Seeing as they are following in the footsteps of the Welsh voting reforms with this news, I would hope that if all goes well then they will follow with the PR changes too. Although looking polling at how Labour are expected to fare in the Sennedd, maybe they will consider it not in their interests.
