Chatterboxtown.us Migration

Chatterboxtown.us is a Jabber service which is not affiliated with Soprani.ca or JMP. Nevertheless is used to be a popular option for JMP customers and so I am mentioning this situation here. The Chatterboxtown service is having trouble and recommending most users migrate to a new service.

Your account with chatterboxtown may have been removed if you did not follow their instructions prior to the migration on 2026-04-05. If this is the case, your quickest path to resolution is to register with the same username and password as before at https://chatterboxtown.us:5443/register/new/ you can read their announcement here: https://movim.chatterboxtown.us/community/pubsub.chatterboxtown.us/news-and-announcements/chatterboxtown-us-post-server-apocalypse-of-2026-version-5CFOWH

If you are absolutely unable to get into your chatterboxtown account, and cannot access SMS in any other way, you can contact JMP support by email at [email protected] to begin account recovery process. You will be required to properly identify yourself and please be aware that normal email deliverabiliy issues apply, so use Jabber or SMS for support unless you absolutely cannot.

Once that is done, however, since the admin has suggested that people should move it may be a good opportunity for you to do so. For JMP customers, where to move to? Luckily since 2022 every JMP account already has included in the price your own service just for you, a Snikket instance with your own chosen name (or even on your own domain if you prefer). Please message JMP support https://jmp.chat/faq#support to start the process of creating and migrating to this instance.

Since chatterboxtown is not part of JMP, this does not affect your JMP account in any way. Your phone number will stay the same, your billing will stay the same, only the Jabber ID and password you use for access (and possibly to communicate directly with people on the Jabber network) will change.

downgraded SASL mechanism errors

Many users on the old chatterboxtown.us service are seeing this error in the Cheogram Android app. This was caused by a failed upgrade on chatterboxtown (the admin has said the intend to retry the upgrade). For now this is the instruction to bypass the error:

In the "manage accounts" screen, tap on the account name (not the toggle switch, the account name). That takes you to the "account details" screen where you will find the "accept" button. Tap "accept" and that should let you log in.

For JMP customers: remember, if you prefer you are always welcome to contact JMP support and switch over to the Snikket instance you pay for with your JMP account.

Jabber Call Maintenance

Tomorrow, November 5th, we will be doing maintenance on a major component of the calling infrastructure. Support window will start in the evening after 20:00 EST. During at least part of this time calls in and out via Jabber will not work. SIP calls will be unaffected, as will calls forwarded to other SIP or tel URIs and voicemail will also be unaffected.
