Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Snapchat are launching a counteroffensive to impose chat control on European citizens.

Easier said than done with the monopolies they have on it all. One by one they are all bending the knee.

Decentralisation is the only way. I've only just recently signed up on here, how does moderation etc work? Not to be lazy in asking but I was a bit thrown off by having to submit my email to sign up. I've also been trying Mirage after being taken down from Reddit and wasn't asked for any personal information to sign up on there.

Yeah, and Reddit actively tells its users to hide their posting and comment history, called "curation".

Yo. I'm new here on Lemmy. Was recently banned on Reddit. Have just been surfing a few posts to get the rundown on how Lemmy works vs Reddit.

I seen someone on here saying they didn't have to provide an email to sign up here, but I did? What's that about? It almost put me off signing off completely to be honest as i've been trying out Mirage a lot lately also and they operate differently entirely. No personal information required at all. So when I decided to give it a go here it threw me a bit.

Anyone any idea?

What's the worst privacy compromise that you are willing to admit you make?

To be honest, I got banned off Reddit a few weeks ago and was surprised when I signed up here that i'd have to give my email. I thought from what i'd read on Reddit that Lemmy was decentralised?? Hate giving up any of my personal information for these online forums. I came here to try it after also trying Mirage and their sign up process required no personal information input which was good but I thought f*ck it i'll give it a look on here as well. Is there any way around it? Has anyone else tried Mirage?

Nah i'm with you on that one 100% as well. As someone that's been in the crypto space for years now. (More than I would like to admit). Crypto Twitter for example is a cesspit. I find myself enjoying Mirage more so now due to the fact it's not too dominated with Crypto content. Far from it at this stage. Plus there's no algo, it's all opt in/opt out self moderation, which suits me also.

But I hear you on the crypto culture 100%.

Reddit Tracks My Shared Urls

I only noticed this shit recently man after the Israel/Twitter stuff. I always run a link through claude now to clean it first before posting anywhere. Sounds paranoid but fuck it makes me feel much more comfortable about it.

Does Lemmy track? I'm new here

Mirage feels to me like the very OG Reddit. Even from a UI standpoint. They've built their own blockchain. So when I signed up there, I was given my own seed phrase to access the account vs having to give any of my own personal credentials. Seems a lot more privacy focussed.

Also the moderation there is more opt in/opt out than Reddit for example. No issues with mods like those clowns over on Reddit. Just wasn't too pleased to see here I had to give my email to get on.

Check out mirage.talk and let me know your thoughts. 5RBG-CEW5 code should get you in!

What were reddit chasing you off for out of curiosity?

Brother holy fuck lol if i could high 5 you rn I would. Exact same for me. I lost my Twitter account back in the Covid days and have seen the way it's went with Elon regarding the Israel issue. Unbelievably hard to bite my tongue on there but I don't want to lost my twitter account after getting it back.

Reddit it was gone in a blink. Mirage to its credit, they market themselves as an absolute free speech platform so i've found my takes being received a lot better on there on the israel issue. Reassuring af that I can finally vent somewhere online without fear of any blowback, if that makes sense

So when I signed up there, I was given my own seed phrase to access the account vs having to give any of my own personal credentials. Seems a lot more privacy-focused. Didn't ask me for my personal email, nothing at all as a matter of fact. Definitely feel a lot more comfortable that way.

Reddit no longer the front page of the internet

Never heard of Voyager, i'll check it out.

Was banned on Reddit a few weeks ago and have been trying out Mirage since that but thought i'd give it a go on here also. Can't lie though I don't like the fact I had to hand over my email to get on here. Almost stopped me from going ahead with it. Mirage asked for nada. Prefer it that way. But still keen to see what it's like here too!
