U.S. cities consider banning "right on red" laws amid rise in pedestrian deaths

I live in one of these cities (Denver) and in my city’s case this push is part of a ton of other provisions including a push to set a maximum speed limit citywide of 25 mph.

About 80% of my trips out of the house are walking or on a bike, but it seems clear to me that policies like this don’t improve safety. It’s just lazy policy making. For example, if you set a 25 mph speed limit on a road designed to support 45 mph traffic, most drivers will still drive 45+ mph and you instead get a wild mismatch of driving speeds. This just slows traffic with an arguably negative benefit to safety. Similarly, if you ban turn on red in the city many drivers will still turn on red, but now whether or not a car will turn on red becomes unpredictable.

What our cities need is more dedicated bike and pedestrian infrastructure that is separated altogether from the roads, as well as greatly improved public transit.

It's interesting that gun rights were sold on the basis of "resisting unlawful government." They seen to have _caused and supported_ unlawful government.

That’s still the purpose of the second amendment, for people to own guns to defend themselves and others against tyranny

You can’t expect everyone to agree with you ideologically, and obviously they won’t rise up against a government they agree with. Conservatives don’t see the current administration as tyrannical, so there is no conflict for them between the ideals of the second amendment and their actions.

However, you can absolutely choose to exercise your second amendment rights.

As a gun owning liberal, I’m tired of my peers acting like the second amendment is some conservative agenda. The right to firearm ownership is an eminently liberal ideal. More liberals and leftists should own guns— the second amendment is more important now than ever before.

If you think there is a pressing need for an armed liberal/leftist citizenry, go buy guns and arm yourselves.

It’s worth noting that the lack of second language proficiency isn’t a result of laziness or ignorance

In Europe, most people are a short train ride from another country. There is also a lot of cultural exchange between countries within Europe.

Most Americans are multiple days of driving from the nearest non English speaking country, and that’s just to arrive in an area of Mexico where the people they will interact with overwhelmingly speak English.

In that context, there is little utility for most people in learning a second language. It’s also very difficult to achieve true proficiency when you are so rarely exposed to native speakers of a language.

Yeah I had an alcoholic, overweight, uncle in a leg brace who was like this. He’d try to “help” me get girls by suggesting I do things like this.

“Hey, look, that girl is cute, go ask all her friends to dance with you at once, then you can increase your odds because she thinks she has competition”

Yeah bro no. They’re clearly having a nice girls night out and I don’t want to ruin it

“Just say they look like donuts because they are all curves and sugar”

…. Yeah that’s a double hard no

sigh “you just gotta have confidence. Watch this.”

Then he’d wobble over, joke around, make some catcally comments on their looks, and they’d all be blushing and laughing before heading out with him to the dance floor. It was fucking wild.

I got into the wrong career lol

Generally no if we consider it from a financial perspective. Whether or not it’s worth it on an emotional level is very individual

I work in engineering with a masters, and I make more than people with only a bachelors. However, even with the masters pay bump I am unlikely to ever make enough extra money to make up for the financial losses I incurred in getting the graduate degree. It’s only “worth it” financially if you work full time and have your company pay for the degree.

PHDs make about the same amount of money and get about the same positions as someone with an only Masters. You get a PHD because you love studying and research enough to basically give up half of a decade of your life.

I considered getting a PHD until I realized that >50% of the PHD students and graduates I spoke to described it as, “6 years of my life I’ll never get back”.

Male Birth Control Pill to Stop Sperm Production Passes Safety Test

Reply in thread

Male birth control has to be safer and have fewer side effects than letting women carry the burden of birth control.

I mean, I don’t think this is such a high bar to pass.

Pregnancy is bad but I’d argue the consequences of 18 years of unwilling parenthood far outstrips the consequences of 9 months of pregnancy. The consequences for those 18 years impact both parties.

Furthermore, men have almost zero agency of what happens in the case of an unintended pregnancy. A man can’t say, “this would ruin my life, I am going to choose not to have the baby.”

That makes the risk quite high for a man, IMO, and the only way to take agency over that risk is male birth control.

Norway has some surprising stats

Reply in thread

Seriously. Southern CA alone is 4-5x the population of all of Norway, and that region often has 3-4 taco shops per block when it’s allowed by zoning.

Edit: the USA has 75,000 Mexican restaurants. That means that there are only 73 people in Norway for every Mexican restaurant in the United States.

The average restaurant in the USA serves 100 people per day. That means that, on average, US Mexican restaurants serve more people daily than the entire population of Norway.

The real LPT is to remove water from cider to make an intensely apple flavored spirit without muting its flavors with heat.

Then sell the liquor to nobles and inflated prices without ever revealing the production method

brave little bird

Really depends on the individual birds in question IMO. A red tailed hawk for example is really best optimized for prey on the ground like rabbits. On the other hand, a peregrine falcon is optimized for aerial prey and they eat everything from hummingbirds to geese
