Royal River Park will be at least partially closed from mid-May to September of this year for renovations including a new pathway.

The renovations began with 16 trees cut in March 2026, arrival of the various supplies and materials, and construction expected to begin around mid-May 2026. THE PARK WILL BE CLOSED DURING CONSTRUCTION and is expected to last until completion in September 2026!

I'm looking for privacy-conscious options for a cycling computer or possibly a wearable fitness tracker.

Recording activities has become sort of a journal for me. I like being able to look up when I did a particular ride/hike, or how long it took, where I hit a max speed, whether or how often I've taken a certain road, etc. I also like seeing basic metrics like average speed/distance/time YTD, year over year, or for specific date ranges.

I do track heart rate and time in zones, but would be willing to let that go. I never wear a wearable 24/7 and don't track sleep/hydration/stationary workouts.

I've been using Garmin devices for years, and really like them for ease of use - getting all of my data into one place "just happens automatically" and is available for further analysis. But, I don't like that that one place is, well, Garmin, not to mention that their supporting and data visualization apps are completely enshittified at this point.

Three alternatives spring to mind:

• go back to a "dumb" computer (maybe not such a bad thing!)
• keep my Garmin devices but take them offline - mount them as USB and copy the files locally
• use a phone-based app like CoMaps

Are there any good alternatives out there? Maybe even an all-in-one platform like Garmin, but where the company really puts privacy front-and-center... or platforms that facilitate storing data locally?

Fast forward to Fall 2023-Fall 2025: we finalized the Design and Engineering needed to submit a Planning Department application, applied and received the town-issued permits related to development, and have put the project out to bid! Due dates for bid submissions are October 1, 2025 at 1:00pm - so...we should know more soon!

Ok skating, no classic tracks that I could see. There may have been light grooming since the last storm, but the snow was quite soft on top. Still a good glide, though.

Skate Ski Clinics Feb 2026 with 2x Olympian Caitlin Patterson Three intro clinics for skiers of all levels

• Monday, Feb 23 : Foundations of balance and glide
• Wed, Feb 25: uphill (V1) and downhill technique
• Mon, March 2: Flat terrain (V2) and strong core and arms

Nice outing on the Libby Hill trails at mid-day. A bunch of the trails are marked "ski only," and visitors seem to adhere to that. I would guess the trails were groomed within the past two days or so - corduroy was still visible under a dusting of new snow. Skied all of Moose Odyssey, which had skate lanes and classic tracks throughout; also Holmquist Hollow and Deer Run, which were skate only. The skate lanes were in good shape, not dead flat, but mostly a smooth gliding experience.

Skied some of the River Loop, the Valley Farm Loop, and the Farm View trails at Pineland late this afternoon. The skate decks seemed to be in nice shape, with probably less than 1" of fresh snow on top, still reasonably fast. Conditions were better in the woods than in the fields, where things were pretty drifty.

Pavement repairs related to last week's water main break will continue through FRIDAY, FEB. 6TH with traffic control zones in place. Seek alternate routes if possible, use caution, and expect delays. No sidewalk closures are anticipated.

We have decided to have a skate ski clinic at Payson Park this Sunday February 8th at 10AM. These clinics are some of the most popular events we do so don't miss out! This is a one hour or so beginner/intermediate skate clinic focused on drills to make you a better skate skier, all of the techniques of skating, and how to climb a hill efficiently and effectively! We try to keep these to smallish groups for maximum benefit. Cost is $30 per person cash at the time of the clinic. We will send a follow up email with a reminder about all we cover after the clinic. Grab a friend and come join us! If you would like to attend, please respond with how many people will be attending as an RSVP. Keep in mind it will be about 15-20F so please dress warmly so you are not cold! If we get more people than we are comfortable with in one clinic we will add a 11:30 or Noon clinic also.

Skate-skied Riverside Golf Course in Portland late this afternoon. It's groomed throughout - not sure when: the skate decks are pretty beat up. I couldn't see much difference between the "nordic skier only" side of the trail and the "all other winter activities" side of the trail. There were plenty of dog prints and the occasional fat bike tread to contend with. The classic tracks looked in decent shape.

I'm sure they'll be grooming tomorrow, as there are races tomorrow night.
