And so my 6 month sabbatical draws to a close and tomorrow I will go back to school (at nearly 50 years old) to become an electrician.I did a cursory scan of the course literature, and seeing a lot of stuff I know already I have good hopes I can finish in less than the prescribed 1.5 years (I only have about a year of savings left, so it's kinda necessary I do it in less than 1.5 years).

You put in a bit of work to update an existing port or add a new one, submit it, and then ...... nothing.For weeks, months sometimes.Until you've all but forgotten you made the contribution, and out of the blue you get an email that the patch was accepted or rejected.Not the most motivating way of getting involved I must say.
