I'm very annoyed at how battery degradation makes devices obsolete more quickly. I don't think it's that hard to create an easily serviceable battery, it's just in the company's best interest to not have that. Having the battery deeply integrated with the device, is basically an easy and perfectly legal way to create planned obsolence. Maybe phones will get bulkier, but I honestly doubt it will have a serious effect. IP-ratings might suffer, but I'd wager that a global reduction in e-waste is more important.

As to Apple pulling out of Europe, I don't think so. Given the reluctance with which companies pulled out of Russia, which has an economy the size of Italy, I think they'll find a way to adapt.

I'm not convinced that third party security suites on Windows have a net positive effect. They create new vulnerabilities, and they introduce new and off-brand interaction patterns to the users (security warnings, popups, reminders, etc) which make it easier to trick users into clicking on a malicious popup.
Maybe there are very specific cases where a system needs to be hardened by using specific security software, but in general I think the OS should handle security for general use.

I had the same feeling. It was a lot tougher for me to abandon reddit than Twitter, but ultimately I bit the bullet. I didn't delete my account but replaced all content with a message about the change. Hope it stays up 🤞

I get the same vibe. And the people who truly care about the platform are starting to check out, so you are left with people who feel they are entitled to quality content and are just angry that it is not being provided to them for free.

I debated that for myself, but in the end I still scrambled all my posts and comments. Some were really a loss, I honestly think, but it is a price I'm willing to pay. It is my content, after all, and Reddit has made it very clear that monetizing it by selling it for AI training is part of their business plan. So I went ahead and reluctantly pulled the switch.

I did download everything earlier, so I have a local copy. And most of my OC is also posted elsewhere, so it's not a huge loss, rather an annoying inconvenience. Which I'm fine with, all things considered.

That's pretty much what happened to Digg and MySpace iirc. Their deaths were not sudden occurences, but rather slow slides into irrelevance.

I believe they sent out a message that they had heard a loud pop and were aborting the mission? So the people on the support ship were basically waiting for them to emerge, and the worrying only really started when they took too long.
