Stubsack: weekly thread for sneers not worth an entire post, week ending 28th June 2026

he was most frustrated a couple of weeks back when people called bullshit on his previous round of takes about this

there continues to be a rather particular shade of selfishness involved in each these-shape takes I keep seeing. it's always about how the prompt is for them, how dare anyone else not believe them? and what do you mean externalities we're not talking about power plants we're talking about them

it's exhausting

OpenAI is so cooked and I'm all here for it

far, far, far, far, far, far, far fewer business people than you’d expect/guess are data-driven decision makers

and then there’s the whole bayfucker ceo dynamic which adds a whole bunch of extra dumb shit

it’d be funnier if it weren’t for the tunguska-like effect it’s having on human society both at present and in the coming decades to follow :|

a stunning self own

jesus fuck so many parts of this are psychic injury

the account name, the presumption of "oh yeah my opinion is right", the very nature of this person's "engagement" (quotes intentional) with conflict, the deference to non-authority (holy fuck how the fuck is it that we have worse than the personal-abdication of christianity (oh right, it's mcfuckingsaltman's fault)).....

I want to say "some of these people are in desperate need of a hug", but then as a friend of mine pointed out recently: "maybe if they weren't all such self-loathing pieces of shit they may actually get a hug"

I’m a senior software engineer

ah, a señor software engineer. excusé-moi monsoir, let me back up and try once more to respect your opinion

uh, wait:

but I can’t trust a junior engineer to be perfect either

whoops no, sorry, can't do it.

jesus fuck I hope the poor bastards that are under you find some other place real soon, you sound like a godawful leader

and the engineers I know who are still avoiding it work noticeably slower

yep yep! as we all know, velocity is all that matters! crank that handle, produce those features! the factory must flow!!

fucking christ almighty. step away from the keyboard. go become a logger instead. your opinions (and/or the shit you're saying) is a big part of everything that's wrong with industry.

Mr Beast crypto fraud traced

Reply in thread

for many years, I went blessedly unaware of who this random fuckjack was, knowing only: 1) ambiently knowing the name, 2) that I ambiently know the name (these two things together are usually a decent heuristic for me to not bother digging)

and then I got jumpscared by a full-scale mrbeast standee in a shop some months back

may I soon be able to forget about this fuckjack once again

Neil Gaiman on spicy autocomplete

the splash damage this stuff is causing to the cultural commons is going to be extremely hard to quantify, and undo

I've been pondering it for a little while now and even just spitballing on axes of bitrot/vc-exhaustion/etc, we're going to have all this useless space-filling shit on our collective doorsteps for 5~15y

there appears to be some amount of hope ito things that auto-blacklist sites, etc. but since we don't have real transclusion (and other source-strong models of hosting/serving), provenance problems are going to remain at a nasty prominence for quite a while too

and the fucking shitheads that push this may never be brought to account -_-

LLMs can’t reason — they just crib reasoning-like steps from their training data

there’s a lot of people (especially here, but not only here) who have had the insight to see this being the case, but there’s also been a lot of boosters and promptfondlers (ie. people with a vested interest) putting out claims that their precious word vomit machines are actually thinking

so while this may confirm a known doubt, rigorous scientific testing (and disproving) of the claims is nonetheless a good thing

All my apes

46 hours, guess they’re no longer obsessively refreshing charts now that most of the hype is gone and number can’t give that constant high

But also megalol at these clowns still not having learned to do separation safely. It will never cease to entertain me.
