Is Lemmy's code base "good"?

Reply in thread

No the answer is that it is written in a modern language, is in its infancy and needs a lot of work to be really great, but it's based on a certified protocol ActivityPub, that Mastodon and other "fediverse" systems use. It's going to be really great, eventually.

Thank you fediverse!

for anyone spending a few days on Lemmy it becomes obvious that stripping off all the advertising, algorithms and gunk attaching itself to online forums makes for a much better user experience.

If I created my own instance, what would prevent all the others not federating with mine, or is it accepted by default ?

Reply in thread

no you need a domain - if you already have one you can use a subdomain, e.g. lemmy.mydomain.com - then you deploy a server, point the (sub)domain to it, then install and configure lemmy. Then, if you're so inclined, you can create communities on that instance that federated systems can participate in. The content is hosted on your instance but the subscribers are logging in mostly though other instances.

Why do Lemmy instances have such obscure TLDs?

  1. After you log into your own instance, you don't need to remember any other url, so instance urls don't really matter - it's just an address for the instance.
  2. Less sought-after domain suffixes are significantly cheaper to register than .com and you can usually get what you want for a prefix (main reason)
  3. Lemmy instances are not dot coms by nature so they may as well be something else.

"handrails were deliberately left off to allow the defender to push the attacker off the stairs all together. Also violating all modern building codes, stair treads were sometimes constructed of varying heights to deliberately cause attackers to stumble and fall as they ran up them."

This post knows where you're viewing it from (Lemmy doesn't proxy external images) [ARCHIVED]

I did not know until now that it is possible to embed external images within posts and replies. I thought the only option was to upload to your instance.

this is bothersome, but if you use a VPN then at least there's that.

otherwise it's feasible to track captured addresses based on which posts they read by posting an external image in the post or a reply.

if you are seeing images in this post, then your client address is visible to any external image hosts.

Sheep farmers burn fleeces as wool prices slump

Tuesday June 27 2023, 12.01am BST, The Times

Sheep farmers are burning fleeces because it is too expensive to bring them to market, it has emerged, with Scottish ministers urged to live up to their green agenda and help reinvent the market.

Wool prices have been low since the 1990s, when the product traded at about £3 per kg, but during the past four years returns have reached crisis point for many producers.

An average price of £0.89 per kg at auction in 2019 fell to a total average return to producers of only £0.33 per kg, a drop exacerbated by the pandemic, which closed UK and international markets.

But campaigners say fleeces are versatile and could be repurposed, for example for house insulation, helping to play a role in Scottish ministers’ net-zero ambitions.
