Reddit's unpopular changes were inspired by Elon Musk's layoffs & cost-cutting
Fascinating to watch the internet get worse and worse in real time. It seems enshitification is inevitable for any big and centralized website

Canada's grocery industry concentrated in too few hands, Competition Bureau says

Sadly it doesn't matter if we have antitrust laws or not when no one is willing to enforce them.

Shooters
The newer Wolfenstein games (new order and new colossus) are both great. Totally crazy alternate history plus you get to shoot nazis. I really hope they end up making a third one.

Cursive writing to be reintroduced in Ontario schools this fall
I just don't see the point? I had to learn cursive in elementary and haven't used it at all since then. There has to be more valuable things these kids could be learning.

It doesn’t make a difference which side you tax. If consumers are taxed then corporations will still feel it through reduced demand for their product. If corporations are taxed, consumers will still feel it through increased prices. The tax burden does not depend on who is taxed, but rather how elastic supply and demand are.

Pints on patios, but not in parks — why drinking alcohol in public spaces is still such a big deal
Honestly tragic I can’t drink a beer while I have a picnic :(

Oak Island aka "The Money Pit"
Would highly recommend not watching the history channel show of this unless you want to watch 20 minutes of recaps and “next ons” for every 5 minutes of content + unsubstantiated conspiracy theories about the knights Templar

Chinese economy expected to have slipped into deflation as recovery falters

You don’t see how it’s a bad thing for people to have zero incentive to put money back into the economy? Everyone hoarding money and trying to spend as little as possible will surely have good results!

Lol this is ridiculous. I’ve been hiking in the Rockies plenty of times during the winter, as long as you take the proper precautions you will be fine.

We don't have a healthcare crisis, it's an implementation crisis, says André Picard
Imo it all comes down to finding. Politicians don’t want to spend money today even if it will yield huge returns for society down the line. The healthcare sector is hugely prone to market failure and cannot be left to private industry.

How much do people tip?
Reply in thread
Tipping should be a 0%+ thing
Absolutely agree, I've been studying in Europe for the past few months and one of the best parts about going out to eat is having the price on the menu be exactly what you pay. No one expects you to tip. We should be including taxes in prices as well.

Honestly I don’t think we will see much of a swing. The people who are fed up with it will move to platforms like this while the vast majority will remain on sites like Reddit or twitter. It’s the same with adblockers, most people don’t bother with them because they just don’t care. That said, I don’t see anything wrong with decentralized sites like lemmy staying on the smaller side, it draws less attention from the same people who have ruined the larger sites.

Television
Reply in thread
Just got a used Vizio and I have the same problem. 100% of the time I’m using my Apple TV on one input, but as soon as I turn it off it switches to smart cast. Except it can’t even find my wifi network, so all it does is give me a screen saying it can’t connect. Why can’t it just stay on the input I set it to??

Canada should follow Finland's traffic safety model

Exactly, narrow lanes mean they actually have to pay attention to what’s in front of them. Roads should be designed so people don’t feel comfortable going above the speed limit.

Exactly, I WISH the government would view these issues from an economic perspective, because that would mean actually helping these people and integrating them back into society
