City of Medicine Hat’s Southwest Substation to begin construction in June

Construction on Medicine Hat’s Southwest Substation project will begin in June 2026.

The City of Medicine Hat received approval from the Alberta Utilities Commission for the construction and operation of the facility on April 25, 2025.

The substation, known as MHS-11, is located west of Gershaw Drive and Highway 3, just north of Saamis Prairie View Cemetery.

In early June, the City says you will see increased on-site activity, with crews bringing in machinery and starting the groundwork to prepare for construction.

The City says the project is part of its long-term planning to support growth and maintain reliable electric service for customers across the community.

If you drove past the Gas City Campground this morning, you might have noticed something unusual for early April: trailers are already unhooking and campfires are starting to crackle.

In a major shift for local tourism, Medicine Hat has officially moved its camping season up by nearly six weeks. Traditionally, the gates at Gas City didn't swing open until the final Friday of April. This year, the city pulled the trigger on an April 6 opening, and the reason is a mix of changing climate and local demand..."

Medicine Hat teen looks to create environmental impact with her SMART roof project

Fourteen-year old Echo Moreton said black roof shingles absorb the sun’s energy to help melt snow off a roof in winter.

In the summer months that heat absorption isn’t beneficial, which is why she created shingles that change colour to white when reaching 26 degrees celsius.

Spyware being used by 13 federal departments

A directive from the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) requires that all federal institutions carry out what it calls a privacy impact assessment (PIA) prior to any activity that involves the collection or handling of personal information, with the goal of identifying privacy risks and ways of mitigating or eliminating them.

According to the directive, which took effect in 2002 and was revised in 2010, federal departments must then provide a copy of their PIA to the TBS and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.

Radio-Canada asked each of the federal institutions using the spyware if they had first conducted privacy impact assessments. According to their written responses, none did. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans said it intends to do so.
