Video - Cuban Doctors Respond to U.S. “Forced Labor” Accusations

Duration - 2:59
[a video about Cuba from the news collective Belly Of The Beast]

U.S. politicians call Cuba’s medical missions “forced labor,” without providing evidence to back the claim.

Cuban doctors volunteer to go on international missions, where they are paid many times more than what they make in Cuba. Cuban medical workers have served on international cooperation missions in more than 150 countries since the 1960s, usually working with populations that otherwise wouldn’t have access to care.

Listen to Cuban doctors in Italy’s Southern region of Calabria respond to U.S. accusations.

Watch our full-length documentary film “From Cuba to Calabria: Medical Missions in Times of Crisis.”

Reddit's auto-moderation

Reddit seems to have introduced sitewide AI moderation bots that are sweeping up users and outright banning them, without warning or explanation, for crimes like including links in their posts. This has started to hit some pretty well-known artists in r/comics.

It's inconsistent and unpredictable - which makes it worse, since you don't know what the rules are. As companies like Reddit give up more and more control to unaccountable machines, this kind of thing is getting more common.

Reddit has always had kind of a strange relationship with contributors and what is often called "self-promotion". On one hand, it wants Content... But it can't seem to decide where it wants the content to come from.

It's nice that we've got alternative spaces like this.

Anyway, have some links:

Code That Built the Internet: The Impact of BSD, Part 1

Like the Spanish Inquisition, nobody expected the internet. Its earliest appearance (as ARPANET) took place in the same year—1969—as the comedy troupe behind the Spanish Inquisition quip, Monty Python. But during its first decade, the internet was treated as a convenience for file-sharing and a couple other applications; few observers anticipated how it would alter modern life until decades later. The major institution that brought computers into the internet age was the University of California at Berkeley, which created a version of Unix that they called the Berkeley Software Distribution and is now known as BSD.

US congressman demands probe into Israel’s 1967 attack on USS Liberty

Republican Congressman Thomas Massie has urged the United States to reopen its investigation into a 1967 Israeli attack on a US Navy ship, the USS Liberty, that killed 34 service members and injured 171 others.

Monday marked the 59th anniversary of the attack, and Massie honoured the occasion by delivering a speech on the floor of the House of Representatives, in the presence of survivors.

The Israeli government has long maintained the incident was a “friendly fire” accident. But some crew members from the USS Liberty have disputed that assessment, calling the attack deliberate.

Massie highlighted their testimonies in his speech, which questioned the official version of the events.

“While they’re still alive, they need closure,” Massie said of the survivors.

Turkey liquidates nearly all US Treasuries as Iran war bites economy: Report

Turkey sold almost all of its US Treasury holdings in March, in a sign of the deep economic pressure the country’s economy has come under as a result of the US-Israeli war on Iran.

Turkey liquidated around $14bn in US Treasuries, bringing its total holdings of US debt to just $1.6bn dollars, Bloomberg reported on Thursday, citing its own estimates based on US government data.

Turkey’s vulnerable economy has been hit on multiple fronts by the US-Israeli war on Iran.

The country imports nearly all of its oil and gas from abroad. Rising energy prices have made those imports more expensive. Turkey also imported about 14 percent of its natural gas from Iran before the war, but those flows reportedly stopped after an attack on Iran’s South Pars gas field.
