How to set up CloudStream on Android TV: a practical guide

I recently set up CloudStream on my Android TV and wanted to share a clean, practical setup that works well with a TV remote.

  1. Prepare your TV Check that your Android TV is updated, that you have enough free storage, and that you know how to open Settings. Keep your TV on a stable Wi-Fi connection during setup.

  2. Install safely CloudStream is not in the Play Store on most TVs, so it is usually sideloaded. Use a trusted file-transfer method you already use, allow installs only for that installer app in Settings, and turn that permission off again after you finish. Only install apps you trust, and check the app permissions before you accept them.

  3. First run Open the app, allow local storage access if it asks for it, and choose a simple layout that is easy to read from the couch. Turn on subtitles and pick a default subtitle size that is readable at your normal viewing distance.

  4. Make it remote-friendly Use the directional pad to move through lists, long-press to open options, and use voice search on the remote where it helps. If text entry is slow, use the on-screen keyboard or pair a phone keyboard app.

  5. Keep it tidy Clear the cache if the app slows down, keep the app updated, and uninstall it from Settings if you stop using it.

For the Android TV steps in one place, see this CloudStream Android TV guide.

Has anyone else tried this on a Chromecast with Google TV or an Nvidia Shield? I am curious which remote layout works best for you.
