His father was a pastor whereas he had a profound distaste for the church. Presenting him as a defender of religion is not accurate at all. I guess it's easy to misrepresent him because there are a lot of nuances going on, and his writings also don't always align perfectly.

Also as illustrated again and again, from ICE hunting down good people to cops stalking women because they are pigs, surveillance is not safety. It's rather the opposite. I want privacy so that I can remain safe.

I don't think anyone who ever lived in a totalitarian regime would describe it post fact as having made them safer.

This sounds really great! I think it's clear that ActivityPub needs to expand into location based information at some point. I also don't see why reviews and discussions of places shouldn't be part of the social web.

As far as I understand what @[email protected] offers is a very flexible protocol for reviews. I'm not sure if it would be best to integrate it with ActivityPub somehow, or if it makes more sense to add it as an additional protocol to platforms for which it's relevant. The easiest solution I could see would be Fediloc only performing two-way federation through ActivityPub, but broadcasting reviews outwards through the Mangrove standard to maximise their reach. That way reviews will become integrated into services supporting Mangrove, while keeping the benefits of ActivityPub within Fediloc.

Comaps will support Mangrove reviews on Android very soon, and it is already supported in their (more experimental) desktop app. It might also be added to OsmAnd if the team merges the pull request. So it seems the hurdle of making it into map apps has largely been overcome by Mangrove, while the social media aspect of it still needs work. In either case supporting Mangrove at this point is probably necessary to avoid XKCD 927.

I feel a bit awkward coming in from the sidelines as I don't have anything to contribute, but with Mangrove gaining traction I at least know there's a growing demand for a user friendly platform for generating place reviews with it. I don't know how much time and resources you have to dedicate to Fediloc, but it looks really interesting at least. I know I'd use it. :) @[email protected]

They're keeping a low profile on their surveillance technology while successfully marketing themselves as a privacy alternative in consumer tech. Its pretty fascinating to watch. I wouldn't blame anyone for missing it.

I find it crazy that there are people out there who care about ethical repairable tech enough to invest hours and hours into Fairphone, have the know-how to hack away at Linux on mobile and develop hardware support, and nevertheless use Reddit and Twitter as the only channels to communicate this work.

I get that the Fediverse is still pretty niche by most standards, but for FOSS development it seems to be a pretty obvious meeting point.

As far as I can tell Ubuntu Touch, Sailfish and postmarketOS are all daily driver ready. In pmOS you typically have the choice between GNOME and KDE, both of which seem to have their fans, meaning there are at least four relatively mature mobile desktop environments.

The biggest problem as far as I can see is app support, which is not a problem of Linux phone development but of monopolistic and/or careless third parties. And even for that Android emulation seems to have gotten pretty good.

I'm not sure what you assumed and how it fails to align with reality, but Linux phones have had camera support a long time. It's just that it needs to be added separately for each device, each time by unpaid hackers who bought the devices for their own money.
