Lemmy.world Admin Response to Meta/Threads

Just keep one thing in mind: even Meta themselves are saying they'll wait until they have a billion users, and then they'll decide what to do.

Freely admitting they'll play nice (not even ads) until they have a monopoly.

Now it's not surprising, that's how companies like Meta operate anyway. It's just quite brazen for them to just say it outright. That shows how confident they are that nobody will challenge them.

So that's the kind of company we're talking about here.

Defederate lemmynsfw.com?

2 weeks ago: Lemmy is so amazing, create an account anywhere and you can access everything! It's like forums but better!

Now: defederate >:(

Ugh. I get the concern in scenarios like this, but in the last couple of days every instance has calls to defederate from this or that. Eventually it's just gonna be small islands of "very compatible" instances.

Well, guess it's back to making separate accounts for everything!

Classic 4/?

Why do the anons always have crazy shrieking girlfriends that call them a removed?

... Actually, never mind.

Edit: oh great, censorship. That "removed" wasn't what I wrote.

I don't even know how Lemmy works

For those who missed this. Izzy, the (only) mod at the science fiction community, was banned by admins.

The reason is him often complaining about there being ads in the Sync client for Lemmy.

Admins take that as toxic behavior and harassment, and ultimately banned him. Which... Take it as you wish, the modlog and comment histories are available.

Izzy came back from another account to say their goodbyes, as they no longer wish to be involved anyway. This post seems to have disappeared.

Then a bit later, admin came to SF to make a post looking for new mods. When people brought up the situation, they locked the thread.

The Global Hypocrisy of Rescuing the Titan

The hypocrisy isn't with the sub. Extensive rescue efforts always happen with oddball accidents and disappearances. Any sub or ship disappearing while exploring the Titanic would get the same attention.

The hypocrisy is with handling refugees in general. Just like with the local homeless, nobody simply knows what to do with them, everyone likes to pretend they kinda care but also want the problem to go away, and nobody wants to have them in their own back yard.

Well, unless it's Ukrainians with "blond hair and blue eyes" (yea I'm not getting over that, because that's exactly how people think about this situation) who are welcome with open arms and get free housing and care. Because all war refugees are equal, but some are more equal.

But some black kids? If a couple hundred drown, that's just less problems for the western countries.

That's how it works.

Why is pure oxygen called O2 when oxygen is an element?

Reply in thread

Not just with itself, also with other elements. Say, you won't find pure iron in the wild either, because normally it reacts with oxygen so well.

But yea oxygen needs to pair with something because its outer electron shell is incomplete. So pairing with another oxygen atom is likely, but also with whatever else is available - nitrogen, iron, whatever.

Most elements are found in molecules really, with the exception of noble gasses like Helium. And some are less reactive than others.

Internet developments have gone from exciting to dreadful.

I only really watch foss stuff, which should be exciting, but I get tired as it's always much of the same news:

  • a new private messenger (like we don't have 500 of those already)
  • a new app/program/distro that does the same thing as 10 other ones
  • a "simple" app/program that doesn't do much of anything, just like 10 other ones of the same kind, will get 3 updates and then die
  • something for the terminal for terminal nerds that could really use a gui but shutup you dirty normie
  • a library that sounds cool but nobody except maybe some corporation will ever use it
  • announcement of a complete rewrite, which means we'll never hear of the project again

So I'm not exactly thrilled about anything either, tho for every different reasons

TIL Soviet cosmonauts carried a shotgun on space missions

The attack in space angle was probably just to convince some manager.

The survival in Siberia is completely valid. US retrieves their astronauts in the ocean, but Soviet Russia didn't/doesn't have such a worldwide navy, so Siberia it is. It could take days for the cosmonauts to be recovered, so it was expected they might need to defend themselves against wildlife or even hunt.

[META] So... about the bots

Bot posts are so annoying, and they are everywhere on Lemmy. RSS bots, repost bots, Reddit clone bots, sporting matches bots. Everything gets reposted 50x already and bots make it all that worse. I disabled bots so I can have peace, but now I won't get to see the actual useful bots that fix links and such.
