IMHO, the problem is more subtle: nothing on the internet will stay forever, if you find a piece of information you like to save forever, you should save it locally AND with something like internet archive. A community can transfer to the same community in another server with proper forewarning. Finally, mastodon introduced the ability to move your account to another istance manteining your followers for quite a while now, maybe lemmy can find a way to introduce something like that too

Do any of you have that one service that just breaks constantly? I'd love to love Nextcloud, but it sure makes that difficult at times

I really don't understand all those posts: I use nginx, apparmor, partially even modsecurity, I use collabora office official debian package, face recognition, email, update regularly (waiting for major upgrades for every app I use to be updated), etc. and literally never had a problem in the last 5 years except for my own experiment. True, only 5 people use my instance, but Nextcloud is rock solid for me

Quasi nessuno, é purtroppo evidenziato da moltissimi ex admin di mail selfhostate. Anche protonmail e tutanota hanno avuto grossi problemi con Microsoft e per anni la loro posta é finita nello spam. In generale, comunque, avere player mastodontici che gestiscono il 99% di un determinato servizio, mina irrimediabilmente qualsiasi standard (vedi come si é evoluto internet dopo il monopolio chromium) e sistema decentralizzato. Inoltre il rischio é sempre quello molto concreto della strategia "abbraccia, estendi, estingui"
