What are Misskey and its forks (*key)? A brief overview

Misskey is Japanese microblogging software, but it's unlike other microblogging software like Mastodon that more closely mirrors the design and features of Twitter. Instead it, and thus its forks (e.g. Sharkey/Iceshrimp), have a distinct design and variety of features unique to it.

A couple of which are Antennas (custom feeds) and Pages (blogging). With its approach to custom feeds, you make a couple lists of keywords to show posts including specific terms and filter out those including other terms.

E.g. a feed looking for cute cats might have an include list of the words cats/kittens and an exclude/filter list of the terms dogs/puppies/etc.

Then there's Pages, which are relatively straightforward. Basically they're blog posts or any longer form post where you might want to play with more formatting options.

Alongside these there are several other features, like custom themes, Channels (sort of like local-only groups/threads), and more that I'm less familiar with. In any event, Misskey and its forks are rather different from some of the other microblogging stuff you may have seen before, so I encourage checking them out!

This should better help follow my last post, where I highlighted a few instances people using Lemmy might be interested in. This comment hit the nail on the head, so I made this to try to correct for that a little.

Did you know? Lemmy instances with *key instances!

In case you've been interested in wading into microblogging and didn't feel like Mastodon was your thing, the Lemmy instance you're on might have a *key instance to check out!

I'm posting to your from Sharkey World, Lemmy World's Sharkey instance. However I was surprised to find that Programming Dev has an Iceshrimp instance over at Bytes. Meanwhile I first learned of Blahaj Zone from their Sharkey instance awhile before they spun up their lemmy instance.

One of the cool features of each of these is that even if you're not into microblogging, they also basically have a blogging feature built in alongside it in the form of a Pages feature. Prefer the long form? Write there and then easily turn around and share it with a microblog post.

Some accounts to get your feed going

I put together and made public several lists of accounts by topic to try to help newcomers to Mastodon/Sharkey. It may be more useful to people on some of the *key instances, but it's closer to home this way regardless.

As I mention, I tried to keep this to non-personal accounts to not bother people, so many of the options are larger media outlets that some may not care for. However that's not unlike some of the big social media sites, so nothing new there.

If you've found this helpful, pass it along, or better still: if you're on one of the *key instances, put together and publish some lists of your own (with individuals' permission if including them) to help others.

These are some as-I-went observations and notes, so not to be taken as comprehensive. For the most part I think it's pretty similar to Mastodon-Lemmy interactions, but others can chip in with anything different or that I may not have encountered.
