I have eOS on the fairphone 5, and I have had zero problems with banking apps and the like.

That doesn't mean you won't have problems though, I don't use many of those kinds of apps other than a bank authentication app, and a few others for public transit tickets, etc. I also live in europe, milage may vary elsewhere.

Keep in mind that eOS IS android, just with google telemetry removed. You can add a google account if you want/need to, at which point any android app should work as expected. That of course defeats the purpose somewhat, but even then eOS will still help you stay as private as possible by informing you about app trackers and using alternative services for location, etc.

It's not crappy, it's appropriate for the use case. This is not some flagship android phone, it's meant for tinkering, for texting, maybe some mariocart on the metro. Also the thing doesn't cost $1000+, which is a good thing.

The horror stories often come from years ago, when Linux wasn't as under-friendly as it is now. You shouldn't have any problems with this.

And if Mint does give you problems (which I doubt), consider trying a plug-and-play gaming distro like bazzite. It supports nvidia GPUs right away.

Just a suggestion: If you do want to find people to play with, you should try meetup.com, I met my RPG group there, and we've been playing weekly for almost 20 years now.

I'm extremely happy with bazzite, it's basically impossible to break, and great for gaming.

Just be aware that it is very focused on flatpaks, so installing anything that doesn't have a flatpak version does require some extra steps.

For me, it evoked a pleasant chuckle. I saw a socially inept man first making a woman uncomfortable with his staring, then trying to garner similar attention in a misguided way. I didn't see anyone oppressing anyone, no burqas or toxic masculinity. Just a silly joke.
