Trains and buses

Remembered something from the time when I was working for the railways:
I had a right to grant anyone a right to travel without a ticket, as long as there was a very good an exceptional reason for that. Used it only once, when someone had been robbed and they could prove it. He was let to go to his home, 600 km away, by train for free.
Different countries have different systems, but in Finland it would not be far-fetched to actually hitchhike in a train by politely asking the conductor on the platform before boarding. Just tell about your trip and its goals. Your success rate with that will be maybe 5 %, but it is more than zero!
If you're anyhow at a railway station around the time a suitable train is leaving, it definitely won't hurt to try your luck!

Another thing is that hitchhiking buses is entirely possible as well. Personally, I've done that 3½ times:

  • A bus driver somehow told he's "not" going to drive via the locality of Veikkola, and refused to sell me a ticket nor let me enter. I then stopped the next long distance bus on the same stop and asked if his might be the bus I needed. He told it would have indeed been that previous one, and just told me to board his bus. Near Veikkola he stopped on the motorway(!) to let me out the bus. I walked up the ramp and got where I was going.
  • In Ukraine it has happened twice that a bus has stopped when I've been hitchhiking with my thumb out. First time the driver made it unambiguously clear that "yes, you are hitchhiking, no, you do not have to pay". The second time we had a similar-ish conversation with the bus driver, but when alighting the bus, I was asked to pay. Which I merrily refused and said byebyes to the driver. I figure that was a misunderstanding, not intentional from by the driver.
  • In the Russia I once got a 150 km ride on a 70% full bus. For free.

Especially in buses it should definitely be doable asking the driver if you could hitchhike on his bus. Most will say no, some will say yes. Won't hurt to ask if you're anyway around.

And as a bonus:
With trucks I've done this successfully a lot of times. Even right in the centre of the city, a large truck is bound to be going somewhere far away relatively soon. Sometimes they don't know their next trip yet when you go asking, and can't help. But often the answer is first "no, I'm going nowhere", but if you continue with "but are you maybe going somewhere next morning or something like that?", the answer is often something along the lines of "yes, I'm leaving for this and this town 250 km away at 4:30 in the early morning". And then "why not, actually!" when you ask if you could come by at that time. It does work. (Maybe same could work with bus drivers and train conductors, actually?! Ask where they're going later the same day or tomorrow, and ask if you could join for free!)

Is this not too profane for a children's daycare centre?

When they built this daycare centre, it was apparently cheaper buying clothes drying closets from Sweden... And Sweden has its own language that is as closely related to the local language here, Finnish, as Arabic is related to Spanish. So, just like it would make sense having a machine with text in Arabic in Spain, it makes sense to have one with text in Swedish in Finland.
::: spoiler (Okay, Spanish people don't need to study Arabic in school, but then again most Finns don't really learn anything in the Swedish classes
:::
anyhow)

But ok, I’ll be a good **** for the machine all right. I do understand I need to know my place.

Latvian henkilörautatieyhtiö suunnittelee yhteyttä Tallinna–Riika–Väinänlinna–Vilna

Latvian sisäisen rautatiematkustajaliikenteen hoitavan yhtiön, Pasažieru Vilciensin, jonka brändinimenä on Vivi, hallituksen puheenjohtaja on antanut haastattelun, jossa kertoo aikomuksesta aloittaa junayhteys Tallinnasta Väinänlinnaan jo tämän vuoden loppuun mennessä.

Hitchhiking equipment

"Hey, there are these two-port USB things for the standard 12 V socket (the "cigarette lighter") in my closet! Maybe I should actually write a word or two about them on that community!"

So, let me spill out something about useful hitchhiking paraphernalia

  • That 2-socket USB. Outside Europe it is still relatively common that the only USB port a car has is used for charging the driver's GPS or phone. I'm carrying a 12 V plug with 2 USB sockets so that I can plug the driver's device to that and still also charge my own phone.
  • A small laptop with a 7 hour battery life, plus a laptop charger that can be plugged into the 12 V socket were a wonderful combination! Even in middle of the complete emptiness of Kazakhstan I never ran out of battery on my laptop because I could charge it in every car. Obviously this meant my laptop essentially ran on gasoline, which is not necessarily the most eco-friendly way to charge your computer. But, it's possible.
  • A low tent in a dark colour. I had a dark-green Forclaz 2 tent, which is tall enough in one spot to sit upright, but otherwise had just enough space for my legs not to hit the ceiling. It was surprising how easy it was to camouflage it almost invisible! That tent model is now discontinued, but the concept was of a lot of use for me, until a horse stepped on the tent and broke it. Meh.
  • A small cooker that can be fed with branches. It produces so little smoke that you can hide in almost any roadside ditch and nobody will know you're cooking with fire right next to the national arterial road!
  • Cooking oil, garlic, soy sauce, spice powders. With those, you can make a different food each morning and evening, out of just a few ingredients! Also, cooking oil is good help for starting a fire in some circumstances. It needs to heat up to quite a high temperature so that it starts vaporizing and is able to burn. But once it burns, it is able to help even relatively wet wood start burning hot enough that the rest of sticks will catch fire as well!
  • A very thick marker pen. Because there are situations where it is very useful to write a sign saying which way you're trying to go.
  • Duct tape. And: They basically don't sell duct tape in Asia! Everything I was able to dig up in central Asia, China or Thailand was of a very low quality compared to what I was used to back home! So, bring enough from back home if duct tape is a necessity for you like it is for me 🤣

And of course: On highway service areas you can very often find food people have left uneaten and clearly untouched. Easy way to stay fed! I kept bringing dirty dishes to the rack where they are supposed to be brought. When the workers see you help them while waiting for leftover food to appear, they don't seem to care of you being in some corner where you don't disturb the paying customers.

Happy travels! 👍
