Instagram is getting rid of end-to-end encrypted DMs that ‘very few’ people used
Since when did Instagram support E2E? I didn’t even know, lol.

Server growing pains
More people should move their accounts off to smaller instances with less load. You can still interact with communities the same way, but have a user experience that is a lot better.

I seriously get annoyed at the amount of work it takes to keep a PC running.
Can you elaborate more on that? In my experience unless you set up a complicated NAS or home server setup maintaining a personal computer doesn’t require much upkeep. I prefer it over a phone because of the physical keyboard and superior window / tab / organization options.
PS: Wrote this comment from my phone anyway 🥲

Well well 🤨

Yes, ideally you‘d want to have a few large communties on each instance and not all topics with a single userbase on one. This not only decreases the load but also prevents scenarios in which a single admin starts to capsule their instance with a large userbase away from the federation.

ChatGPT pauses Bing integration to stop people from bypassing paywalls
I guess that only applies to paywalls that can also be bypassed by 12ft.io, right? I.e. paywalls that open themselves up for indexing by search engines like Bing or Google.

Instagram quietly drops end-to-end encrypted chats
Reply in thread
Well e2e encryption is never private for the entity contrilling the endpoint. Instagram could push an update which decrypts and uploads your past chat history. Of course they’d only do it for your benefit so you don’t lose any data /s

Is it just me or did anyone else became a more avid poster since joining lemmy?
I really like the default active sorting keeping discussions in older threads alive for longer. The comment sorting also makes it easier to join discussions later on :)

I like these federated services being kinda "rough around the edges"

I think the original Bitcoin proposition had some merit in introducing a new concept and a new type of trustless economy. However probelms in scaling the PoW mechanism and transaction fees make it infeasible for daily use.
99.9% of the other stuff? Never understood why people see value in NFTs. Especially given that they mostly link to image files on someones web server that would point to a 404 page if taken offline.

Just until someone starts vomiting in places other than the toilet. In many cases it‘s better to be invited than to be the host ^^

I don’t think I’ve mischaracterized the PC experience but it’s been about a decade since I ditched the technology. Do those PC-specific annoyances no longer exist?
I think everyones experience is equally as valid. For your use case and needs a tablet+keyboard works perfectly fine.
I do think a lot of the PC annoyances you mentioned have improved drastically over the past decade. For example: I hear that back in the day getting a printer to work was stressful. Now (for me) it just works out of the box both on MacOS and Linux. Only Windows for work still has some driver problems in my case.
But the windows experience has probably become even worse since your last time on a PC anyway. I can‘t fathom why anyone would stick with Windows unless it is some very specific application or video game that doesn‘t work on other platforms.

YSK: If you want faster and less buggy User experience, move to a smaller instance that is hosted close to you.

I read a LPT on here saying to choose a smaller instance for better performance. The most popular instances are overloaded by the influx of users, smaller instances not as much. And using the federated system you can still suscribe to different communities, comment on posts… all while having a more stable user experience :)
