For my Masters thesis project, I'm required to keep a blog documenting my progress, and being the open source/self hosting guy that I am, I decided to host my own WriteFreely instance on my VPS.

The problem is, WriteFreely doesn't support direct image uploads, only embeds. I'd of course like to self host my images for the blog too, so I'm in need of a really lightweight image hosting solution. Things like Immich or Nextcloud are far too much for what I need, I basically just need a password-protected upload interface and the ability to grab the direct links to the images to embed them. I don't need analytics or account management or anything like that.

I know I could transfer images to my server directly via scp or rsync or ftp and host them behind nginx directly, but that's a faff and I'd rather just deploy a container once and be done with it.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Two days ago, I posted to this community asking for help with managing subtitles and audio tracks on my media server (and removing the ones I don't need). @[email protected] suggested I try Muxarr which looked promising, so I set it up yesterday.

First impressions were good, the setup was really easy and I set up the profile I wanted in around 10 minutes (only keeping the English and original audio tracks, and only English subtitles). I enqueued all my files (there's a big green button in the top left which I somehow missed for a few seconds, but that's on me) and it started doing its thing. It did take a while to process my nearly 3000 files so I left it running overnight. I came back this morning to find it had worked perfectly and all my media had the unwanted tracks removed.

What's possibly even more impressive though, and something I wasn't expecting, was that removing all that unneeded data had freed a whopping 135GB of storage!! I only have 8tb available total and with storage prices as they are right now, that's really quite a significant amount to just be sitting there holding data that will never be used.

I just wanted to take a few minutes out of my day to write this and thank @[email protected] and this community for recommending Muxarr to me and spread the word to others who didn't know about it like me two days ago

I've been successfully using Jellyfin and Sonarr/Radarr for over 2 years now, and one of those things I find really annoying when it happens is incorrect audio tracks playing or subtitles showing. It happens rarely enough that I forget to do anything about it (until now) but it's something I'd like to never have to think about again.

I'd ideally like my setup to abide by the following rules

For subtitles:

1. Display English[Forced] subtitles by default if applicable (the kind that show up if characters suddenly start speaking another language as part of the media in question)
2. Otherwise have subtitles off by default
3. Have English subtitles available as an option in case I want them
4. Completey remove all other subtitle options from the media entirely

For audio tracks:

1. English by default if available
2. Otherwise the native language of the media as the default (bonus points if English subtitles can be enabled automatically if this case arrises)
3. The native language of the media available as an option if applicable (even if an English audio track is available)
4. All other audio track options removed from the media entirely.

Does anyone know of any tools or post-processing options I can use to accomplish what I want?

This question is mainly for those that have family/friends depending on their self-hosted services/data. Does anyone have a plan for the worst case scenario in terms of data access/passwords/making sure your services are kept running if people depend on them? I know I sure don't, it's just a strange curiosity my brain thought up and I wondered if anyone else had considered this?

I ditched most streaming services well over a year ago now, but Spotify has clung on because I have a playlist of around 2000 songs. I've set up Navidrome but now need to transfer all my music in the highest quality possible as efficiently as possible.

I tried lidarr some time ago, but it seemed to be based more around artists than individual songs and my indexer failed to find most of my library.

I've seen a couple of apps that will look at a playlist and then try to yt-dlp the song from YouTube but I'm worried about having a lower quality or different version. I've wondered if automating an "analog hole" type approach where I just pipe the audio of each song to a file and leave it playing overnight for a couple of weeks might actually be the best approach but that does seem a bit insane at this scale.

I'm a 25 yo British guy. I landed my first job as a dev in 2022 for a consultancy with a 1 year international placement, it was good but a few months after returning, the whole cohort was laid off due to corporate politics between the offices in the two countries. After 7 months of searching, I got my second job working for a small pensions fintech startup, it was fine but I didn't find it all that fulfilling. After 9 months of working there, the CEO pulled me into a meeting and said they'd made a mistake hiring me and they needed a more senior developer who could help steer the company from a business perspective too, so I was once again laid off.

That was in January, since then I've had 2 interviews, both of which have gone nowhere. The vibe of every position that's matched my CV has basically been the same sort of work- pretty mundane web dev roles and I can see myself being pulled into a cycle of mundane work then being laid off. I've wanted to be a developer for as long as I can remember, I started writing code when I was 12, studied CS throughout school so I could go to uni and do it for my degree - but now, I feel so disillusioned with the whole industry, where do I go from here? Does it get better? How do I find a job that actually feels fulfilling?

Indie animation has been increasing in popularity recently. It's clear there is more demand than ever for fresh stories with creators, not large corporations in control. I thought it would be a good idea to compile a list of channels with the aim of getting more eyes on the smaller projects, and more people into indie animation as a whole.

To be eligible for this list, creators must be producing an original animated (2d or 3d) work of fiction not based on an existing property. Storytime animators and collections of animated skits (e.g. ASDFmovie) while great and loved by many are not the "right vibe" for this list.

How to use this list

Creators will be listed in alphabetical order by channel name followed by the name of the show in [square brackets]. The list will be updated periodically based on recommendations in the comments. All the initial channels listed here will be from YouTube, but feel free to suggest creators on other platforms.

Various notes will be provided as superscript numbers, the meanings are as follows:

• ^1 - Only a pilot released
• ^2 - Pilot not yet released
• ^3 - Channel frequently uploads other content not related to their own animation

But first the big one

The biggest name in the indie animation space right now is Glitch Productions they make several shows including the immensly popular "Murder Drones" and "The Amazing Digital Circus" with at least two more series currently in the works. For this reason, and because they have also done a lot of work to promote other indie animators I feel they deserve a special mention above the list.
